For the remainder of the photon epoch the universe contained a hot dense plasma physics plasma of nuclei, electrons and photons. About 380,000 years after the Big Bang the temperature of the universe fell to the point where nuclei could combine with electrons to create neutral atoms. As a result, photons no longer interacted frequently with matter, the universe became transparent and the cosmic microwave background radiation was created and then structure formation took place. main inflation cosmology Physical cosmology In physical cosmology the inflationary epoch was the period in the evolution of the early universe when, according to inflation theory , the universe underwent an extremely rapid exponential metric expansion of space expansion . This rapid expansion increased the linear dimensions of the early universe by a factor of at least 10 sup 26 sup and possibly a much larger factor , and so increased its volume by a factor of at least 10 sup 78 sup . The expansion is thought to have been triggered by the phase transition that marked the end of the preceding grand unification epoch at approximately 10 sup 36 sup seconds after the Big Bang . One of the theoretical products of this phase transition was a scalar field called the inflaton field. As this field settled into its lowest energy state throughout the universe, it generated a repulsive force that led to a rapid expansion of the fabric of space time . This expansion explains various properties of the current universe that are difficult to account for without such an inflationary epoch. It is not known exactly when the inflationary epoch ended, but it is thought to have been between 10 sup 33 sup and 10 sup 32 sup seconds after the Big Bang. The rapid expansion of space meant that elementary particles remaining from the grand unification epoch were now distributed very thinly across the universe. However, the huge potential energy of the inflation field was released at the end of the inflationary epoch, repopulating the universe with a dense, hot mixture of quark gluon plasma quarks, anti quarks and gluons as it entered the electroweak epoch . Physical cosmology In physical cosmology the quark epoch was the period in the evolution of the early universe when the fundamental interaction s of gravitation , electromagnetism , the strong interaction and the weak interaction had taken their present forms, but the temperature of the universe was still too high to allow quark s to bind together to form hadron s. The quark epoch began approximately 10 sup 12 sup seconds after the Big Bang , when the preceding electroweak epoch ended as the electroweak interaction separated into the weak interaction and electromagnetism. During the quark epoch the universe was filled with a dense, hot quark gluon plasma , containing quarks, leptons and their antiparticles. Collisions between particles were too energetic to allow quarks to combine into meson s or baryon s. The quark epoch ended when the universe was about 10 sup 6 sup seconds old, when the average energy of particle interactions had fallen below the binding energy of hadrons. The following period, when quarks became confined within hadrons, is known as the hadron epoch . Physical cosmology In physical cosmology , the lepton epoch was the period in the evolution of the early universe in which the lepton s dominated the mass of the universe. In geochronology , an epoch is a subdivision of the geologic timescale that is longer than an age geology age and shorter than a period geology period . We are currently living in the Holocene epoch of the Quaternary period. Rock layers deposited during an epoch are called a series stratigraphy series . Series are subdivisions of the stratigraphic column that, like epochs, are subdivisions of the geologic timescale. Like other geochronological divisions, epochs are normally separated by significant changes in the rock layers they correspond to. Epochs are most commonly used for the younger Cenozoic Era, where a greater collection of fossils have been found and paleontologists have more detailed knowledge of the events that occurred during those times. They are less commonly referred to for the other eras and eons, since less fossil evidence exists that allows us to form a clearer view of those time periods.
