Erasmus Alberus c. 1500&ndash 1553 , Humanism in Germany German humanist , reform movement reformer , and poet , was born in the village of Bruchenbr cken now part of Friedberg, Hesse about the year 1500. Although his father was a schoolmaster, his early education was neglected. Ultimately in 1518 he found his way to the University of Wittenberg , where he studied theology. He had the good fortune to attract the attention of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon , and subsequently became one of Luther s most active helpers in the Protestant Reformation . Not only did he fight for the Protestant cause as a preacher and theologian, but he was almost the only member of Luther s party who was able to confront the Roman Catholics with the weapon of literary satire . In 1542 he published a prose satire to which Luther wrote the preface, Der Barfusser Monche Eulenspiegel und Alkoran, a parodic adaptation of the Liber conformitatum of the Franciscan Bartolommeo Rinonico of Pisa, in which the Franciscan order is held up to ridicule. Of higher literary value is the didactic and satirical Buch von der Tugend und Weisheit 1550 , a collection of forty nine fables in which Alberus embodies his views on the relations of Church and State. His satire is incisive, but in a scholarly and humanistic way it does not appeal to popular passions with the fierce directness which enabled the master of Catholic satire, Thomas Murner , to inflict such telling blows. Erasmus Haworth 1855 1932 was an American geologist . Born on a farm near Indianola, Iowa , he graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor of science degree in 1883 1881? and received a master s degree there the following year. He received his doctoral degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1888. He taught at various colleges, and was appointed professor of geology and mineralogy at the University of Kansas in 1892, where he remained until 1920. Today, Haworth Hall, a building named after Haworth, houses the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of Kansas. He organized the Kansas Geological Survey in 1894, and wrote several volumes of the survey from 1896 to 1904. He was state geologist from 1894 to 1915. In this position, he was instrumental in finding an ample water supply for Wichita, Kansas Wichita and Newton, Kansas Newton . In 1903, he collected and analyzed a sample of gas later discovered by his colleagues to contain helium , in the abundant, economically feasible source of natural gas . In the late 1890s and early 1900s, Haworth repeatedly used his position as state geologist to warn against investing in phony zinc and gold deposits in Trego and Ellis counties, Kansas. The politically influential promoters threatened to have Haworth fired from the University for his interference, but it eventually became clear that the deposits were an illusion and a swindle, and Haworth was vindicated. ref Dan Plazak 2007 The imaginary gold mines of Kansas , Mining History Journal, v.14, p.11 22. ref Haworth was connected with the United States Geological Survey ... . Multiple issues orphan February 2009 context August 2009 unreferenced October 2009 lead missing October 2009 The island of Erasmus of Formiae St. Erasmus was first colonized in 1625, and the town of St. Elmo s was founded. Most scholars and historians simply refer to the island as St. Erasmus, as the island is quite small. Short History St. Erasmus was founded in 1624 in relative peace, considering what was happening on the islands around it. However, in the fall of 1640 the island began to be rocked by waves of pirate attacks. Colonial reports of the action are taken from the very few preserved copies of broadsheets from the period, The Saint Erasmus Times, and from letters to relatives who lived back in England at the time. Interestingly enough, we can even glean a bit of history from the tax code s of the period. Through all of these documents, and the vast array of myths surrounding the islands, we can begin to piece together the very colorful history of a small island during English Civil War the English Civil War . Starting in 1640, St. Erasmus suffered a rather amazing jump in its homicide rate, due to a rash of murders in October and December respectively. The perpetrators were never caught, possibly because they left the island before any strong investigations could be lost. It s not believed that the murders were in any way connected to each other. The October ones targeted both male and female adults. The December victims were primarily young girls, excepting the massacre of the town s guards in the woods no specific force, Indian or other foreign national was ever blamed. Another set of murders in 1641 was focused on several local sailors. References Reflist DEFAULTSORT St. Erasmus And St. Elmo s Category Fictional islands ... more details
