Unreferenced date December 2009 Esperanto sidebar expanded Language In Esperanto there are two kinds of interrogatives yes no interrogatives, and correlative interrogatives. Yes no interrogatives Yes no question s are formed with the interrogative u whether at the beginning of the clause. For example, the interrogative equivalent of the statement La pomo estas sur la tablo The apple is on the table is u la pomo estas sur la tablo? Is the apple on the table? A yes no question is also normally accompanied by a rising Intonation linguistics intonation . In some cases, especially when the context makes it clear that the sentence is an interrogatives, a rising intonation alone can make a clause into a question, but this is uncommon and highly markedness marked . The subject and the verb are not inverted to form questions as they are English language English and many other European languages. Correlative interrogatives Esperanto has a series of words which can be arranged in a table according to how they start and end which are often called correlative s . The column of words which begin with ki can be used to ask questions which cannot be answered by yes or no . These correspond to wh questions in English. These words are kiu who or which kio what kia what kind of kie where kiam when kies whose kiel how kial why kiom how much or how many These words are inflection inflected according to the role they play in the clause for the words which take an inflection , and moved to the beginning of the clause. For example, Kion vi faras? What are you doing? Kiu has the usual dual function of adjectives standing alone as proform, or modifying a noun, as in Kiu tago? which day? . Tio is exclusively used standing alone. As with yes no questions, there is no inversion of subject and verb ... clauses. In practice, however, confusion is very rare. Because of its shape, the symbol is sometimes informally called the melon melono , egg ovo or football rugbea pilko . With a Latin E on one side and a Cyrillic for on the other, it can be interpreted as being inclusive of East and West. At the time, the Cold War was waged between the United States and the Soviet Union, and they represented the largest enemies in the world. The desire for a more modern looking symbol for Esperanto arose when many Esperanto speakers felt that the Esperanto flag appeared too sectarian. Nowadays, many people use the Jubilee Symbol to represent the international Esperanto culture as a whole. For example, the World Esperanto Association and Esperanto USA use it as their symbol. Variations of the symbol involve the addition of a green star, the addition of the text ESPERANTO , a national or local symbol, or a combination of the three. The Vortaro de Esperanto Dictionary of Esperanto , published by Kazimierz Bein in 1911, was the first monolingual dictionary ever published for Esperanto . It is considered the predecessor of the Plena Vortaro de Esperanto , published in 1930, and of the current Plena Ilustrita Vortaro , whose last edition came out in 2005. The first edition of the Vortaro de Esperanto was published in 1911, the second in 1922 and the third in 1925 they were, in truth, merely reprints . Overall 8500 copies of the dictionary were printed the book was 175 pages long. The only Esperanto dictionary published previously had been the Plena Vortaro , an EsperantoEsperanto and Esperanto French dictionary published in 1909 by mile Boirac nevertheless, it contained somewhat imprecise definitions in its monolingual section. The Vortaro de Esperanto is considered by scholars of esperantology a valuable source of information about the Esperanto of the early 20th century, given the presence of many archaism s and old fashioned meanings of words. Structure The definitions, brief but clear, contain example phrases. However, the dictionary lacks any etymological references to the first use of a word and does not mention whether or not if a word was personally introduced to the language by Zamenhof, or possibly even mentioned in his Fundamento de Esperanto . The structure has remained essentially the same throughout the Plena Vortaro of 1930 and in the modern Plena Ilustrita Vortaro . Unreferenced date September 2009 La Plena Vortaro de Esperanto lang en The Complete Dictionary of Esperanto , abbreviated as PV is a monolingual dictionary of the Esperanto language first published by the Sennacieca Asocio Tutmonda SAT in 1930, largely considered the first truly comprehensive dictionary written entirely in Esperanto. History French academic mile Grosjean Maupin was the original chief editor of the PV, with additional contributions over the years from Albert Esselin , Salomon Grenkamp Kornfeld , and Gaston Waringhien . Between 1930 and 1996, SAT published 11 editions of the PV, but following the revised and corrected second edition of 1934, revisions over the decades were infrequent. The most significant post 1934 addition was a 63 page supplemental section contributed by Gaston Waringhien to the fourth edition in 1953. The 1934 edition included 6,900 roots, while Waringhien s supplement added an extra 966. Influence Widely lauded upon its first appearance, the Plena Vortaro has largely been superseded by its successor, the Plena Ilustrita Vortaro de Esperanto , which first appeared in 1970 and is now considered the standard reference dictionary of the language. However, in addition to forming the foundation of the PIV, the PV is also the basis for the Reta Vortaro online dictionary launched in 1997, as well as many bilingual Esperanto dictionaries still in use. However, for the unity of the language for all Esperantists it is recommended to imitate as much as possible the style that is found in the works of the creator of Esperanto, who has worked the most for and in Esperanto and knows best its spirit. It is considered the only obligatory authority over Esperanto and is thus unchangeable. The Fundamento consists of four parts a Foreword Anta parolo , a Grammar Gramatiko , a collection of exercises Ekzercaro and a Universal Dictionary Universala Vortaro .
