Unreferenced date June 2007 The term ethical calculus , when used generally, refers to any method of determining a course of action in a circumstance that is not explicitly evaluated in one s ethicalcode . A formal philosophy of ethical calculus is a recent development in the study of ethics , combining elements of natural selection , self organizing systems , emergence , and algorithm theory. Ethical calculus is based on the premise that moral and ethical codes are emergent algorithm s, epiphenomena of large groups of sentient beings, and that a given moral code or ethicalcode behaves in organic ways, seeking to prolong itself. According to ethical calculus, the most ethical course of action in a situation is an absolute, but rather than being based on a static ethicalcode, the ethicalcode itself is a function of circumstances. The ideal Ethic is the course of action taken in a given situation by an omnipotent, omniscient being. The optimal ethic is the best possible course of action taken by an individual with the given limitations. The standard of judgment is the continuation of situations in which ethics are relevant. While ethical calculus is, in some ways, similar to moral relativism , the former finds its grounds in the circumstance while the latter depends on social and cultural context for moral judgment. Ethical calculus would most accurately be regarded as a form of dynamic moral absolutism . Ethical formalism is a type of Ethics ethical theory which defines moral judgements in terms of their logic al form e.g., as laws or universal prescriptions rather than their content e.g., as judgements about what actions will best promote human well being . The term also often carries critical connotations. Immanuel Kant Kant , for example, has been criticized for defining morality in terms of the formal feature of being a universal law , and then attempting to derive from this formal feature various concrete moral duties. Ethical formalism is related to, but not identical to, Harry J. Gensler s relatively recent circa 1996 theory of formal ethics . Formal ethics is similar to ethical formalism in that it focuses on formal features of moral judgments, but is distinct in that the system of formal ethics is explicitly and intentionally incomplete. Specifically, while some ethical formalist systems e.g., arguably Kant s universal laws view a set of formal features as both necessary and sufficient, formal ethics views such formal features as necessary but not sufficient. Ethical formalism is considered as an absolutist system, if something is wrong, it is wrong all the time Pollock, 2004 . Just the same, if something is right, it is then right all the time. Notability date August 2009 Ethical extensionism is an argument in environmental ethics that moral standing ought to be extended to things animals, plants, species, the earth that traditionally are not thought of as having moral standing. For example, while many cultures differ as to what, exactly, is murder , all cultures take it as wrong to commit murder. An example of ethical extensionism would be to extend to dogs or cats the status of being something that can be murdered, so that it would be wrong under some circumstances to kill a dog or cat. On the one hand, ethical extensionism is a broadening of the class of things to which humans may owe an ethical duty. But Des Jardins makes the point that most ethical extensionism has been merely broadening the ethical sphere incrementally, a process not agreeable to some environmental ethicists who would prefer more of a total replacement of traditional ethics with an entirely new approach. So, while ethical extensionism can, in principle, broaden the sphere of ethical standing to any arbitrary limits, the extensionist approach is seen by more recent ethical theorists as being inadequate. Unreferenced date December 2011 Ethical monotheism is a term used to describe the belief in a God who guides humanity through ethical principles. This can be seen as distinct from monotheistic beliefs which may be based on dogma or doctrines. Ethical monotheists sometimes believe that all ethical standards are derived from God and they are thus dependent upon the divine in this way. The foundation of ethical monotheism within the three Abrahamic faiths Judaism , Christianity , and Islam , are found in the 7 Noahide Laws . These are recognised as universal laws for all humanity by Orthodox Judaism , are encouraged as a foundation by early followers of Jesus Council of Jerusalem Acts 15 and are evident within Islam . This unifying aspect is often neglected within the modern world. The other independent major foundation of Ethical Monotheism is Zoroastrianism . Ethical subjectivism is the meta ethics meta ethical view which claims that Ethical Sentence linguistics sentence s express proposition s. Some such propositions are true. Those propositions are about the attitudes of people. ref Brandt 1959, p. 153 Objectivism and subjectivism have been used more vaguely, confusedly, and in more different senses than the others we are considering. Ethical subjectivism stands in opposition to moral realism , which claims that moral propositions refer to objective facts, independent of human opinion to error theory , which denies that any moral propositions are true in any sense and to non cognitivism , which denies that moral sentences express propositions at all. The most common forms of ethical subjectivism are also forms of moral relativism , with moral standards held to be relative to each culture or society c.f. cultural relativism , or even to every individual. The latter view, as put forward by Protagoras , holds that there are as many distinct scales of good and evil as there are subjects in the world. ref moral subjectivism is that species of moral relativism that relativizes moral value to the individual subject . http www.iep.utm.edu r relativi.htm Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy ref ...
