Etz Chaim Yeshiva was originally a Talmud Torah which was established in 1841 by the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem , Shmuel Salant . For the first two years classes were held in various rooms throughout the Old City Jerusalem Old City . In 1857 the yeshiva consolidated in to a group of buildings adjacent to the Hurva Synagogue , sharing the premises with the Beth Din of Jerusalem. It was at this stage that the institution was renamed Etz Chaim Yeshiva . Head teachers was Rabbi Chaim Mann. His brother Yehuda Leib Mann was the secretary who also served as a teacher. They were the sons of Rabbi Yaakov Mann who was a prominent scholar who had declined the invitation of Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank to become a dayan on the Beth Din. He went on to build the Sha arey Tzedek Medical Center and the Lemel school . As the yeshiva expanded a plot of land on Jaffa Road was acquired in 1908 and subsequently a kollel was established catering mainly for the alumni of the yeshiva. At the time Rabbi Yechiel Michel Tukichinsky , who was married to the granddaughter of Rabbi Salant, served as the rosh yeshiva. After disputes arose between the pupils and the faculty, a permanent agreement was reached by Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank who reallocated the positions of authority. Biography Chaim Egon Kiewe was born in the village Dlottowen Eastern Prussia in 1912. His parents Luis Kiewe and Johanna Toller, the only Jewish family in the village, owned an inn and a horse ranch. As a teenager he moved to Berlin, where he graduated high school and joined the Zionist youth movement HaHalutz. In 1934 he immigrated to Israel and joined Kibbutz Na an. He painted as an autodidact in his free time. His first works are portraits of Kibbutz members, and Kibbutz landscapes. In the 1940s he was a member of the Hagana organisation and in the year 1947 he was arrested in wake of Operation Agatha Black Saturday . He was sent to Rafa Prison, where he sketched the life of the prisoners. In 1948, he was a company commander in the Givati Brigade, during the Israeli War of Independence. Chaim Berlin 1832, Valozhyn &ndash 1912, Jerusalem was an Orthodox Judaism Orthodox rabbi and chief rabbi of Moscow from 1865 to 1889. He was the son of Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin . From 1889 1892 he lived in Valozhyn , Belarus where he was a head of a Beth din rabbinical court . In 1891 he was named by his father Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin the head of the Valozhyn yeshiva. There was controversy regarding this appointment as many students felt that Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik was more deserving to head the yeshiva. ref Shaul Stampfer records Where date August 2011 the length that some of the students went to show their displeasure with Berlin s appointment. ref After that he was the rabbi of Kobryn 1892 1897 and of Kirovograd Elizavetgrad from 1897 . He left Russia in 1906 and settled in Jerusalem , where he was elected as assistant chief rabbi of the Ashkenazi community with Rabbi Shmuel Salant. He also assisted Rabbi Salant in the management of the Rabbi Meir Baal Haneis Salant charity founded by Rabbis Zundel and Shmuel Salant in 1860. Rabbi Salant died at the end of 1909, and Rabbi Chaim Berlin led the Jerusalem Rabbinate and the Rabbi Meir Baal Haneis Salant charity until his death in 1913. Personal life Levanon was born in Krak w , Poland , in 1899 as Chaim Yosef Levinstein . After graduating from a yeshiva , he studied agricultural engineering at the Jagiellonian University . He made aliyah in 1927 and taught at the Ehad HaAm Gymnasium school gymnasium in Petah Tikva . In 1928 he married Miriam Levit Shamrot. Political activity Levanon was one of the founders of the General Zionists youth movement, and later one of its leaders. He also founded and headed the Civilian Housing organization. In 1936 he served as the chairman of the election committee in Tel Aviv and the secretary general of the General Zionists labor union. In 1951 he was elected to Tel Aviv s city council and served as the deputy mayor from 1952. Due to Israel Rokach s resignation and ministerial appointment, he was elected mayor by the city council on 13 April 1953. In 1955, Levanon was publicly re elected into office. Levanon was the main founder of the Tel Aviv University , which he helped advance even after his mayoral tenure, and one of its main streets was named after him following his death.     Rabbi Chaim Kamil 1933 2005 was the Rosh Yeshiva in the Yeshiva of Ofakim , Israel. As a youngster, he learned in Slabodka yeshiva Bnei Brak Yeshivas Slabodka in Bnei Brak and eventually made his way to Mir yeshiva Jerusalem Yeshivas Mir in Jerusalem , where he became a student of Rabbi Chaim Shmuelevitz . At the behest of Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Finkel I Eliezer Yehuda Finkel , then the Rosh Yeshiva of Mir, Chaim Kamil became the Torah study partner of Rabbi Eliyahu Boruch Finkel and Rabbi Nosson Tzvi Finkel Mir Nosson Tzvi Finkel , who himself eventually rose to the position of Rosh Yeshiva in Mir and forever regards Rabbi Kamil as his teacher. Eventually, Rabbi Chaim Kamil accepted the role of Rosh Yeshiva in Ofakim and along with Rabbi Shimshon Dovid Pincus , the communal Rabbi there, helped facilitate the growth of the Jewish community of Ofakim. In addition to his duties in his own Yeshiva, Rabbi Kamil also delivered weekly Talmud ic lectures in the Yeshiva at Tifrach , Israel.
