An evolutionaryarmsrace ...No footnotes date June 2007 The term armsrace , in its original usage, is a competition between two or more parties for the best armed forces. Each party competes to produce larger numbers of weapon s, greater armies, or superior military technology in a technological escalation . Nowadays the term is commonly used to describe any competition where there is no absolute goal, only the relative goal of staying ahead of the other competitors, essentially the goal of proving to be better . Examples of arms races WWI naval armsrace From the dates 1891 to 1919, World War I naval armsrace an armsrace between several European countries , including Germany, France, Russia, and a few more took place. Specifically, Germany s envy of Britain s superior navy in the run up to World War I resulted in a costly building competition of Dreadnought class ships. This tense armsrace lasted until June 1914, when, after two antagonic power blocs were formed because of the rivalry, the World War broke out. Evolutionary programming is one of the four major evolutionary algorithm paradigms. It is similar to genetic programming , but the structure of the program to be optimized is fixed, while its numerical parameters are allowed to evolve. It was first used by Lawrence J. Fogel in the US in 1960 in order to use simulated evolution as a learning process aiming to generate artificial intelligence . Fogel used finite state machine s as predictors and evolved them. Currently evolutionary programming is a wide evolutionary computing dialect with no fixed structure or Genetic representation representation , in contrast with some of the other dialects. It is becoming harder to distinguish from Evolution strategy evolutionary strategies . Its main variation operator is Mutation genetic algorithm mutation members of the population are viewed as part of a specific species rather than members of the same species therefore each parent generates an offspring, using a Selection genetic algorithm survivor selection . Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 In evolutionary theory , an evolutionary landscape or fitness landscape refers to a multidimensional parameter space that organisms or arguably, individual cells or even whole clades occupy. The ordinate or y axis is usually taken to be the Fitness biology fitness of the entity in question the landscape may be described as flat if most changes in the immediate mutational neighbourhood are of negligible effect on fitness. This rare situation is interpreted to mean that the organism in question is not under any form of selection . On the other hand, an organism that is well or poorly adapted can be thought of as inhabiting a local peak or trough respectively. Evolutionary landscapes provide a useful cognitive tool for visualising the consequences of evolution on entities of a system, commonly in the form of fitness landscapes however actual visualisation of real organisms fitness landscapes is fraught with difficulties, not least due to the problems inherent in visualising many dimensions at once. Evolutionary Logic is the idea that logical rules can be reduction philosophy reduced to biology. It is a theory of rationality in which rational and logical rules emerged for pragmatic reasons, and are therefore not special laws. The formal systems of logic have ordinarily been studied independently, but continual progress in evolutionary theory suggests that biology and logic could be intimately interrelated. Evolutionary Logic suggests that the principles of reasoning are neither fixed, absolute, independent, nor elemental. Instead it is the evolutionary dynamic that is elemental. William S. Evolutionary epistemology refers to two distinct topics on the one hand, the biological evolution of cognition cognitive mechanisms in animals and humans, and on the other hand, a theory in that knowledge itself evolves by natural selection . A theory about cognition in biological evolution main Naturalized epistemology Evolutionary epistemology can refer to a branch of epistemology that applies the concepts of biological evolution to the growth of animal and human cognition. It argues that the mind is in part genetically determined and that its structure and function reflect adaptation, a nonteleological process of interaction between the organism and its environment. evolutionary biology Evolutionary neuroscience is an interdisciplinary Scientific method scientific research field that studies the evolution of nervous systems . Evolutionary neuroscientists attempt to understand the evolution and natural history of nervous system structure and function. The field draws on concepts and findings from both neuroscience and evolutionary biology . Historically, most empirical work has been in the area of Comparative biology comparative neuroanatomy , and modern studies often make use of phylogenetic comparative methods . Selection experiments and experimental evolution approaches are also being used more frequently. Conceptually and theoretically, the field is related to fields as diverse as comparative psychology , neuroethology , developmental neurobiology , evo devo , behavioral ecology , anthropology and evolutionary psychology . History The field began after the publication of Darwin s On the Origin of Species , but brain evolution was largely viewed at the time in relation to the incorrect scala naturae . The 1936 book The Comparative Anatomy of the Nervous System of Vertebrates was a landmark publication in the field. Evolutionary suicide is an evolutionary mechanism where adaptation at the level of the individual results in a situation where the entire population goes extinct . This process is different from group selection , and arises where individual fitness is coupled with the fitness of the population. An example of this would be an individual animal who learns to eat buds or seedlings of a food crop, destroying the normal supply of food that would later be available from mature plants. The adaptation of a single animal would cause the entire group to starve to death. Models of evolutionary suicide have generally come from scientists using the mathematical model ing technique known as adaptive dynamics , where models of evolution can be combined with models of population dynamics . This allows the scientist to predict how population density will change as a given Phenotypic trait trait invades the population. Evolutionary suicide has also been referred to as Darwinian extinction , Runaway selection to self extinction or Evolutionary collapse . The idea is similar in concept to the Tragedy of the Commons or the Tendency of the rate of profit to fall . As such, evolutionary suicide remains a theoretical possibility. Very few studies have actually demonstrated it, either in the laboratory or in nature, but this is due to the difficulties associated with observing the exact causes of an extinction ref http www.socialgenes.org publications Pub Oikos1.pdf ref . In the latter essay, Huxley called for a new religion compatible with science. Evolutionary Humanism is the English language name of a book by Dr Michael Schmidt Salomon which suggests that evolutionary theory has implications for morality. Schmidt argues that the theory of evolution does not prescribe a particular set of moral values but it does require people to consider their moral principles free from religious beliefs.
