  1. Exploration geophysics

Exploration geophysics is the applied branch of geophysics which uses surface methods to measure the physical properties of the subsurface Earth , in order to detect or infer the presence and position of ore minerals, hydrocarbons , geothermal reservoirs, groundwater reservoirs, and other geological structures. Exploration geophysics is the practical application of Physics physical methods such as seismic, gravitational, magnetic, electrical and electromagnetic to measure the physical properties of rocks, and in particular, to detect the measurable physical differences between rocks that contain ore deposits or hydrocarbons and those without. 1. Mathematical geophysics

Mathematical geophysics is concerned with developing mathematical methods for use in geophysics . As such, it has application in many fields in geophysics , particularly geodynamics and seismology . Areas of mathematical geophysics Geophysical fluid dynamics Geophysical fluid dynamics develops the theory of fluid dynamics for the atmosphere, ocean and Earth s interior. ref Harvnb Pedlosky 2005 ref Applications include geodynamics and the theory of the geodynamo . Geophysical inverse theory Geophysical inverse theory is concerned with analyzing geophysical data to get model parameters. ref name Parker Harvnb Parker 1994 ref ref name Tarantola Harvnb Tarantola 1987 ref It is concerned with the question What can be known about the Earth s interior from measurements on the surface? Generally there are limits on what can be known even in the ideal limit of exact data. ref Harvnb Parker 1994 loc chapter 2 ref The goal of inverse theory is to determine the spatial distribution of some variable for example, density or seismic wave velocity . The distribution determines the values of an observable at the surface for example, gravitational acceleration for density . There must be a forward model predicting the surface observations given the distribution of this variable. Applications include geomagnetism , magnetotellurics and seismology . 1. Forensic geophysics

Forensic geophysics is the study, the search, the localization and the mapping of buried objects or elements beneath the soil or the water, using geophysics tools for legal purposes. There are various geophysical techniques for forensic investigations in which the targets are buried and have different dimensions from weapons or metallic barrels to human burials and bunkers . Geophysical methods have the potential to aid the search and the recovery of these targets because they can non destructively and rapidly investigate large areas where a suspect, illegal burial or, in general, a forensic target was tried to hide in the subsoil. When in the subsurface there is a contrast of physical properties between a target and the material in which it is buried, it is possible to individuate and define precisely the concealing place of the searched target. It is also possible to recognize evidences of human soil occupation or excavation, both recent and older. Forensic geophysics is an evolving technique that is gaining popularity and prestige in law enforcement . citation needed date February 2012 Techniques The primary technique is examining visual and physical properties. Someone trained in forensic geophysics uses their knowledge of the terrain and physical makeup of the earth to find burial sites, survey an outdoor crime scene, or help law enforcement agencies create topographical maps. Ground Based Radar GBR is used to detect objects buried in the ground. In law enforcement investigations, GBR is utilized to detect objects buried in the ground and reveal ground structure. It is also the period when people explored the ocean boundaries. Notable List of explorers explorers include the Greeks , the Egyptians , the Polynesia ns, the Phoenicia ns, Phytheas, Herodotus , the Viking s, The Portugal Portuguese , and Christopher Columbus. Travel on the surface of the ocean through the use of boats dates back to prehistoric times, but only in modern times has extensive underwater exploration become possible. Scientific investigations began with such early scientists as James Cook, Charles Darwin and Edmund Halley. Ocean exploration itself coincided with the developments in shipbuilding , diving , navigation , depth measurement , exploration and cartography . Timeline of Ocean Exploration Early exploration 4500 BC Around this time, coastal cultures like those in Greece and China began diving into the sea as a source of food gathering, commerce, and possibly even warfare. 4000 BC Egypt ians developed sail ing vessels, which were probably used only in the eastern Mediterranean near the mouth of the Nile River . 4000 BC 1000 AD Polynesia n colonization of Oceania South Pacific Islands. 1800 BC Basic measuring ... are ended after a short time.
