  1. Historian (medical)

Citations missing date April 2007 Historian is a term used by medical professionals particularly physician doctors and nurses to describe a narrator of a medical history . Medical history is usually divided into surgical history all prior surgeries , social history sexual, recreational, and alcohol drug factors , family history heritable diseases and conditions and their presence in family members , and health or personal health history the subject s prior illnesses, together with their treatments and outcomes . A patient s ability to give a good history, that is to accurately recall and describe the details of relevant background, is essential in the treatment of an illness. This term has nothing to do with the subject of History per se and derives instead form the ancient Ancient Greek Greek meaning of history as narrative. Patients who are poor historians will often require the intervention of family members or care givers to provide the missing pieces of history. Patients who mislead doctors about their histories, either consciously or unconsciously, can greatly aggravate the process of diagnosis and delay treatment by requiring the physician to obtain all past medical records. 1. Public historian

Cleanup date November 2007 Unreferenced date February 2007 There are two categories of public historians . The first, and most widely understood definition of a public historian is a practitioner of public history . This definition holds that public historians are generally regarded as those people who create history for public consumption history as digested outside of the academy . Their work can take place in various locations and formats, including museums, historic sites, archives, films, and books. Generally speaking, then, the difference between a historian and a public historian pertains to audience . In the first case, public historians aim to educate and engage the public through history historians , on the other hand, generally speak to an academic audience, and not the general public. Public history has received a boost in popularity over the past thirty years, which has resulted in the development of the second form of public history practice. This second definition of public historians has to do with those historians who, within the academy , study the public consumption of history . In addition, professional historians giving objective expert evidence before courts and tribunals may also be considered as public historians . 1. Historian's fallacy

distinguish Historical fallacy The historian s fallacy is a logical fallacy that occurs when one assumes that decision makers of the past viewed events from the same perspective and having the same information as those subsequently analyzing the decision. It is not to be confused with Presentism literary and historical analysis presentism , a mode of historical analysis in which present day ideas such as moral standards are projected into the past. The fallacy was outlined in 1970 by David Hackett Fischer , who suggested it was analogous to William James s psychologist s fallacy . Fischer did not suggest that historians should refrain from retrospective analysis in their work, but he reminded historians that their subjects were not able to see into the future. As an example, he cited the well known argument that Japan s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor should have been predictable in the United States because of the many indications that an attack was imminent. What this argument overlooks, says Fischer, citing the work of Roberta Wohlstetter , is that there were innumerable conflicting signs which suggested possibilities other than an attack on Pearl Harbor. Only in retrospect do the warning signs seem obvious signs which pointed in other directions tend to be forgotten. See also hindsight bias . In the field of military history , historians sometimes use what is known as the fog of war technique in hopes of avoiding the historian s fallacy. In this approach, the actions and decisions of the historical subject such as a military commander are evaluated primarily on the basis of what that person knew at the time, and not on future developments that the person could not have known. According to Fischer, this technique was pioneered by the American historian Douglas Southall Freeman in his influential biographies of Robert E. Lee and George Washington .
