The Indigenous deity of the Chavin civilization known as Raimondi Stela is a sacred object and a major piece of art of the Chav n culture of the central Andes in present day Peru . The stele stela is seven feet high, made of highly polished granite , with a lightly incised design which is almost unnoticeable on the sculpture. Contour rivalry means that the lines in an image can be read in multiple ways, depending on which way the object is being viewed. When the Raimondi Stela is viewed one way, the image depicts a fearsome deity holding two staffs. His eyes look upward toward his large, elaborate headdress of snakes and volutes. When flipped upside down, the same image can be seen differently. The headdress can be read as a stacked row of smiling, fanged faces, while the deity s face has turned into the face of a smiling reptile. The deity s staffs also appear to be rows of stacked faces. This technique speaks to larger Andean concerns of the duality and reciprocal nature of nature, life, and society. This theme is found in the art of many other Andean indigenous civilizations. unreferenced date December 2010 Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 The Tenpo famine , Tenpo no kikin , also known as the Great Tenpo famine , Tenpo no daikikin was a famine which affected Japan during the Edo period . It is considered to have begun in 1833, and lasted until 1837. It was named after the Tenp era 1830 1844 , during the reign of Emperor Nink . The ruling shogun during the famine was Tokugawa Ienari . The famine was most severe in northern Honsh and was caused by flooding and cold weather. The famine was one of a series of calamities that shook the faith of the people in the ruling bakufu . During the same period as the famine, there was also the Fires in Edo K go Fire of Edo 1834 and a Richter Scale 7.6 magnitude earthquake in the Sanriku region 1835 . In 1837, the last year of the famine, there was a revolt in Osaka led by shio Heihachir , against corrupt officials who refused to help feed the impoverished residents of the city. Another revolt sprung up in Ch sh Domain . Also in 1837, the American merchant vessel Morrison Incident Morrison appeared off the coast of Shikoku , and was driven away by coastal artillery. The sum of these incidents made the Tokugawa bakufu look weak and powerless, exposed the corruption of officials who profited while commoners suffered, and made it look as if perhaps the shogun had lost the Mandate of Heaven , a Confucianism Confucian concept of the validity of a ruler.
