It is the major local language spoken in the Central and Western Regions of Ghana as well as in settlements in other regions from mid to southern Ghana. One of such communities is Fante New Town in Kumasi , in the The Ashanti Ashanti Region of Ghana . Fante is the common language of communication among the several Kingdoms of the Fante people , though each has its own sub dialect Agona, Anomabo, Abura, Gomua, Oguaa, Ahanta. Many Fantes are bilingual. Notable speakers include Dr. Kwame Nkrumah , John Atta Mills , Maya Angelou , Roman Catholic Cardinal Peter Turkson , and Kofi Annan . One striking thing about the language is its tolerance of the English Language. This is exemplified by the constant mixing of the two languages even amongst uneducated folks. Example, in the phrase Ofi mbir tu mbir literally means from time to time. The use of the word tu is similar to the English word to and in this phrase is used in the same way an Englishman would have used the word to . The language has many more of such examples. This has particularly been a source of concern to many Ghanaians who believe that the trend may adversely affect the Language and may lead to its extinction. However, proponents of the mix also say that over the centuries it has helped to encourage the Fantes to like and learn to speak, read and write the English Language well. The Ashanti Fante War 1806 1807 was fought between the Ashanti Confederacy and the Fante Confederacy of present day Ghana . The Ashanti Confederacy was a major African kingdom on the Gold Coast British colony Gold Coast . Rivalry between the Ashanti and Fante was long held but grew much more serious in the beginning of 19th century. The United Kingdom British were usually allies of the Fante, and the Netherlands Dutch of the Ashanti. The war began when the List of rulers of Asante Asantehene of the Ashanti charged some people with grave robbery robbing graves . The Fante promptly gave refuge to the accused, who were people from Assin , and Osei Bonsu thus sent an army against the Fante. At Abora , four miles from Cape Coast , a battle was fought, in which the Ashanti were able to capture their own people charged for robbing the grave this was their victory. However, the Fante were but a handful compared to the Mighty Ashanti army and still managed to see off the thousand men sent awaiting for a thousand more to come. A British agent representing the African Company of Merchants at Cape Coast sheltered the accused grave robbers, whilst the Ashanti went on to attack the fort at Kormantine Fort Amsterdam Ghana Fort Amsterdam of their old allies the Dutch. The British then tried to make friends with the Ashanti, and Colonel Torrane, who was in charge at Cape Coast, most treacherously handed an old and blind Assin king called Kwadwo Otibu to the Asantehene, although he knew the old man would be killed which he was. Noref date June 2009 The Ga Fante War in 1811 was a war in the Ashanti Confederacy situated roughly in present day Ghana . It involved a series of battles between the The Ashanti Asante and their allies, the Ga people of Accra , against an alliance of the Fanti , Akyem and Akuapem states. There was a series of battles. The Asante won the initial battle, but then had to retreat because the Akwapim Akim made effective use of guerrilla tactics in what is now the Akuapem Hills. The Asante were at a disadvantage because they did not know the terrain and the Akwapim Akeym did. Emboldened by the victory over the Ashanti, the Akwapim Akyem also went on to fight colonial Europeans forces they advanced on and captured a Netherlands Dutch fort and a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland British fort at Apam and Tantamkweri respectively both in the central coastal part of modern day Ghana .
