Frangistan lang fa was a term used by Muslims and Persian people Persians in particular, during the Middle Ages and later historical periods to refer to Western or Christian Europe . Origin and meaning During the Crusades , the Muslims of the Middle East came to call all Christendom Franks , originally the name for inhabitants of the largest of the Christian realms in Europe, Francia . Since very few Muslims ever travelled to Western Europe and the term Frank could mean any Western European Christian whether Frankish, Saxons Saxon , County of Flanders Flemish , etc. , Frangistan was no clearly defined area and may have referred to any land perceived to be Christian by contemporary Muslims. Frangistan literally means Land of the Franks , from farangi Farang which is the Persianized form of Frank plus the suffix istan coming from the Persian language . ref Dehkhoda Dictionary Dehkhoda Persian Dictionary ref In a similar way, R m derived from Rome came to mean the Byzantine Empire and Greek Christianity Greek Christians were Rumi disambiguation Rumi s , and Christians generally called Muslims Saracens or Moors Moormen , the former deriving from a tribe that once lived near the Roman province of Arabia . Unreferenced date April 2009 For the Filipino term, see Barang Philippine mythology . Barang is a Khmer word meaning French. It is often mispronounced like ba r ng . The correct pronunciation is b r ng , but p r ng is also acceptable. It is thought to be corruption of the word France but this may be a misconception. Verify source date September 2010 The term is obviously related to the Thai term farang which has a similar meaning. In the Malay language , barang means thing . The origin of this word is debatable as there are several possibilities. One is that it came from Arabic faranj via Malay traders. Another is that it came straight from the French. Since Khmer does not have a letter that represents the Latin F , it is pronounced with a B sound. As with many Khmer words of foreign origin, n s often change to an ng sound. Such as Aleurm ng German which comes from the French word Alamanni Allemand . In the Khmer language, the term barang has also come to mean a foreigner, particularly one of European ancestry. It is not a demeaning word, but some Khmer speakers might use it in a bad context. The term is becoming more popular now among travelers. It is even used by some expatriates living in Cambodia themselves. Khmer is the official language of Cambodia which was once a French protectorate called Colonial Cambodia Cambodge in French. The French had many influences on the Khmer language, such as the pronunciation of Mercedes Benz Mercedes . Many technical terms used today in Khmer are of French origin. Barang is also used as a suffix in some Khmer words such as m n barang which is transliterally French chicken, but refers to a turkey. Another word is kh teum barang which is transliterally French allium and means an onion . Barangsaes is another Khmer term that shows its relation with the word Fran ais, but it is rarely used. Named Bottle Beach for its protected cove and due to the shape of the cove which can be seen from the rock, which actually resembles the shape of a bottle . It s known for quiet isolation on an island known mostly for its riotous Full Moon Party . The beach is most easily reached by boat from the northern end of the island, though this is not possible in bad weather. There is also a poorly marked mountain trail leading to the beach and primitive road which the owners of the beach s guest houses will drive you down if the boats are not running. Bottle Beach has developed from a little known traveller hide away. Many years ago a group of European backpackers wanted a place to spend a long term on the island. They asked around if anyone knew of a place they could be . A thai family rented them some simple A frame huts on the beach and they would walk around totally naked. One man would leave Chaloklaam in the morning with 5 kg of ice and would walk the trail along the headland to get to the beach and arrive with no more than 2kg of ice for the Farang to enjoy a chilled drink. It has grown into a very popular backpacking travel backpacker beach with a lively party scene. Once a beach of only a few reasorts the ful length has now been used. The beach is beautiful and the accommodation, although a little overpriced, is good. The long sweeping white sand beach is, quite simply, lovely, particularly in early morning and late afternoon when the bulk of the daytrippers have left. Sleek white sand that squeaks up through the toes and pristine waters to escape the heat draw a steady trade of repeat visitors, a predominantly younger crowd than those you ll encounter on the western beaches of Ko Pha Ngan.
