The Royal manor of Faringdon was given to the Cistercian monks by John of England King John in 1203 for the founding of an abbey. It was built at Wyke, a lost placename that was located just north of the town between the Radcot Road and Grove Wood. It was almost certainly never finished for the abbey moved to Beaulieu, Hampshire Beaulieu in the New Forest in the following year.     Faringdon was a rural district in the administrative counties of England administrative county of Berkshire from 1894 to 1974. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1894 based on that part of the Faringdon rural sanitary district which was in Berkshire, however it also included for a time Lechlade a small market town in Gloucestershire . It is around the north west region of historic Berkshire now south west Oxfordshire since it was transferred in 1974. The Faringdon rural district bordered Gloucestershire to the north west, Wiltshire to the west and Oxfordshire and the River Thames to the north.
