The second largest Protestant movement is the Open Brethren community. The Faroe Islands , located between Scotland and Iceland, are partly ruled by Denmark and as such the people have long practiced the same religion as the Danes. The Faroe Islands became a Catholic country in about 1000. Originally belonging to Norway , Faroe fell under the jurisdiction of Denmark in 1523. The last Catholic Bishop of the Faroe Islands was Amundur Olavson he was replaced by the first Lutheran bishop, Jens Gregers n Riber, in 1540 . There exists ancient evidence about when this country became Christian in the F reyinga saga . The saga states that the king of Norway told Sigmund to go by ship to the Faroe Islands with orders from the King. Sigmund s orders were clear he was supposed to make the 18 small islands Christian, which is what he did, according to the saga. This event is believed to have taken place around 1000 and the Faroese did not establish an organised Catholic Church before around 1100, so there do appear to be some inconsistencies in the saga. The third largest religious group are charismatic movement . Today the Catholic Church is an extremely small minority. Image Faroese Shawl.jpg thumb A Faroese shawl knit by Lisa Risager A Faroese shawl is a traditional piece of clothing from the Faroe Islands . The most distinguishing characteristic of Faroese shawl s is the center back gusset shaping. Each shawl consists of two triangular side panels, a trapezoid shaped back gusset, an edge treatment, and usually shoulder shaping. The shoulder shaping allows these shawls to drape over the shoulders and remain in place as the wearer moves, even if the shawl is not pinned in place. Instead of a more familiar triangular, rectangular or circular shape, Faroese shawls are shaped like butterfly wings. Some have very long ends so they can be tied around the wearer s waist for extra warmth. The shawls often feature elaborate lace work. Lace knitting is a traditional handcraft of peoples of the Faroe Islands. These shawls are traditionally knit from domestic wool of Faroes sheep native sheep grown primarily for meat. Natural colors of brown, black, grey and creamy white are most often used. Some shawls may have color features in place of lace, or combinations of color panels or stripes and lace panels. The notation used for recording patterns for these shawls is unique. Patterns are drawn out showing the back gusset and one side panel with numerical shaping instructions noted on the diagram. Lace patterns are drawn showing where the eyelets go, but without specifying where the accompanying decreases should go. Most shawls are begun at the neck, but Faroese shawls are begun from the bottom by casting on hundreds of stitches. As the work progresses, structural decreases between the side panels and back gusset reduce the number of stitches until very ... Since the Faroe Islands have no predator that can kill the geese, there has developed a special Goose culture in the Faroe Islands, which has no equivalent in neighboring countries. From May to October there can be seen flocks of geese walk freely in the outfields, where they feed on the short summer grass, without any supplementary feeding. In winter, the geese move freely in the cultivated infields of the villages. In some villages, the infield is of such good quality that earlier the geese didn t even need complementary feed in the winter. However, in most places there is given complementary food when there is snow, and just before and during egg laying. The properties that the Faroese goose have today, is the result of natural selection over centuries, where only the most hardy and frugal birds have managed to get offspring. Properties In Nordisk Genbank Husdyr , the breed is described as a not too large and not at all rough built, but otherwise it must not be refined and neat. Is very hardy and resistant to weather and disease and tolerates a harsh climate. It is hardy, very food seeking and it has good juicy meat. Is somewhat temperamental, awake and guarding and will preferably be left alone during the breeding season.
