  1. Operation Farrier

Operation Farrier was a raid by British Commandos during the Second World War on the Yugoslavia n island of Mljet . The raid by the Long Range Desert Group , No. 2 Commando and No. 43 Royal Marine Commando , all under the command of the 2nd Special Service Brigade , started on 22 May 1943. It came about because a previously planned raid Operation Foothound on the Ugljan and Pasman islands had to be abandoned. There were already some small partisan units and an American Office of Strategic Services agent on Mljet who supplied intelligence on the strength and locations of German forces. In the early morning of 22 May the commandos, divided into two groups, landed on the south coast of Mljet. They manoeuvred behind the supposed German positions at Babino polje and called on them to surrender. Moving in closer they discovered that the Germans had withdrawn from their positions. Some German mortars then landed amongst the commandos and unable to locate their position returned to their waiting ships and returned back to Vis island Vis island. ref cite web accessdate 15 June 2010 publisher Naval History title Naval codewords url http www.naval history.net xGM Ops CodeNamesAlpha.htm ref References Reflist British Commando raids of the Second World War coord missing Category Conflicts in 1943 Category World War II British Commando raids F Category Battles involving the United Kingdom ...   more details

  1. Francis Clater

One source date December 2010 File Francis Clater.jpg thumb Francis Clater 1756 1823 , was a farrier and writer. Clater wrote Every Man his own Cattle Doctor 1810 and Every Man his own Farrier. In the preface to the last named work, which was published at Newark on Trent in 1783, when the writer was twenty six, Clater describes himself as farrier, late of Newark, and states that he served a regular apprenticeship and one year as journeyman to the late W. Frost, farrier, of Nottingham , and being his nephew, succeeded to all the secrets of his profession. The work was published at the desire of the numerous gentlemen and farmers who were Clater s employers, and appears to have roused the hostility of farriers generally. The writer insists chiefly on careful diagnosis of individual cases, and the use of pure drugs. Clater afterwards resided for many years at East Retford , where he practised as a chemist and druggist, as well as a cattle doctor, and, according to the inscription on a small memorial tablet set up in the methodist chapel in Newgate Street in that town, was much respected, and there died, on 29 May 1823, in the sixty seventh year of his age. The publication of his works marked a stage in veterinary progress, and their lasting popularity may be judged from the fact that, at the hands of the writer s son, John Clater, and subsequent editors, the former went through over twelve, and the latter over thirty editions. In the later ones as the edition of Every Man his own Farrier by Mayhew, published in 1850, and of the Cattle Doctor by Armytage, published in 1870 much exploded conjecture has been omitted, and the text almost entirely rewritten. for the RASP computing model Random access stored program machine Unreferenced date December 2008 stack File Raspel Baiter.jpg thumb Wood rasp File HoofRasp.jpg thumb Farrier using a hoof rasp A rasp is a tool used for shaping wood or other material. It consists of a point or the tip, then a long steel bar or the belly, then the heel or bottom, then the tang. The tang is joined to a handle, usually made of plastic or wood. The bar has sharp teeth. Rasps generally cut more coarsely than File tool files . Uses In woodworking , rasps are used for rapidly removing wood from curved surfaces. They remove less wood than a drawknife , so they are easier to control. Even though rasps leave very coarse finishes, the cut away areas can be easily smoothed with finer tools, such as files. There are several types and shapes of rasps. There is a half round, round and flat. The several types of rasps are bastard, cabinet and wood finest to coarsest . All these varieties can be used to make different shapes. In farriery , rasps are used to remove excess hoof wall from a horse s hoof. Rasps can also be used in shaping alabaster stone. In fact, a rasp is the only tool that is prominently used to shape alabaster. Saws and chisels are also used, but only to rough out the shape of the alabaster sculpture. 1. Frog (horse)

Image Gesunde Strahlform.jpg thumb right 200px The frog is triangular in shape. The frog is a part of a horse s hoof , located on the underside, which should touch the ground if the horse is standing on soft footing. The frog is triangular in shape, and extends from the heels to mid way toward the toe, covering around 25 of the bottom of the hoof. ref King, Christine, BVSc, MACVSc, and Mansmann, Richard, VDM, PhD. Equine Lameness. Equine Research, Inc. 1997. ref The frog acts as a shock absorber for the foot when it makes impact with the ground, decreasing the force placed on the bones and joints of the leg. Function of the frog The frog is not only a shock absorber, it is also an important part of the circulatory system of the horse horse s circulatory system &mdash it pumps blood up the horse s leg each time the frog makes contact with the ground. The blood flows down the horse s leg into the digital cushion, a fibrous part of the inner hoof located just above the frog which contains a network of blood vessels. The horse s weight then compresses the frog on the ground, squeezing the blood out of the digital cushion, and pushing it back up the horse s legs. Therefore, farrier s keep the frog as large and ground covering as possible when they trim or horseshoe shoe the feet. When a horse has certain types of lameness equine lameness , the farrier may use the frog for support, using specialized shoes that help keep correct pressure on the frog so that less force is transmitted to the wall and sole of the foot or to the navicular bone , Equine forelimb anatomy Distal phalanx coffin bone , and Equine anatomy Ligaments and tendons deep digital flexor tendon . The frog may also decrease in size if it does not receive constant pressure, which can occur if the heels of the horse become contracted. Problems associated with the frog Thrush horse Thrush a bacterial infection that commonly affects the frog, which can cause lameness in severe cases.
