In cognitive psychology , fastmapping is a hypothesized mental process whereby a new concept can be learned or a new hypothesis formed based only on a single exposure to a given unit of information. Fastmapping is thought by some researchers to be particularly important during language acquisition in young children, and may serve at least in part to explain the prodigious rate at which children gain vocabulary. The process was first formally articulated, and the term fastmapping coined, by Harvard researchers Susan Carey and Elsa Bartlett in 1978. ref name Carey Carey, S. & Bartlett, E. 1978 . Acquiring a single new word . Proceedings of the Stanford Child Language Conference, 15, 17 29. Republished in Papers and Reports on Child Language Development 15, 17 29. ref Today, there is ample evidence to suggest that children do not learn words through fastmapping but rather learn probabilistic, predictive relationships between objects and sounds that develop over time. Evidence for this comes, for example, from children s struggles to understand color words although infants can distinguish between basic color categories, ref name Bornstein Bornstein, M. wiktionary mapping In geomatics or geospatial science and engineering Mapping usually refers to map making and often used instead of cartography . Mapping term is also sometimes used for geospatial data collection e.g. LIDAR mapping but in fact it is not mapping because a map is created through some cartographic works i.e. determining the scale level of detail and content of geographic or cartographic database, entry criteria and symbol specification for geospatial objects, generalization, layout design etc. . In other words, the acquisition of data with geographic coordinates directly from terrain or imagery does not mean mapping but surveying . Chapter 7 Environment Mapping Techniques ref In the majority of cases, cube mapping is preferred over the older method of sphere mapping because it eliminates many of the problems that are inherent in sphere mapping such as image distortion, viewpoint dependency, and computational inefficiency. Also, cube mapping provides a much larger capacity to support real time rendering of reflections relative to sphere mapping because the combination of inefficiency and viewpoint dependency severely limit the ability of sphere mapping to be applied when there is a consistently changing viewpoint. In genetic mapping, the probability of a Genetic recombination recombination event between two genetic Locus genetics loci on the same chromosome is directly proportional to the distance between them. HAPPY mapping replaces recombination with fragmentation instead of relying on recombination to separate genetic loci, the entire genome is fragmented, for example, by radiation or mechanical shearing. If the DNA is broken on a random basis, the longer the distance between two DNA sequences, the higher the chances of it to break between the two, and vice versa. mergefrom gene map date March 2011 Unreferenced date February 2007 Gene mapping , also called genome mapping , is the creation of a genetic map assigning DNA fragments to chromosome s. When a genome is first investigated, this map is nonexistent. The map improves with the scientific progress and is perfect when the genomic DNA sequencing of the species has been completed. During this process, and for the investigation of differences in strain, the fragments are identified by small tags. These may be genetic marker s PCR products or the unique sequence dependent pattern of DNA cutting enzymes. The ordering is derived from genetic observations recombinant frequency for these markers or in the second case from a computational integration of the fingerprinting data. The term mapping is used in two different but related contexts. Two different ways of mapping are distinguished. Genetic mapping uses classical genetic techniques e.g. pedigree analysis or breeding experiments to determine sequence features within a genome . Using modern molecular biology techniques for the same purpose is usually referred to as physical mapping. Physical Mapping In physical mapping, the DNA is cut by a restriction enzyme .
