This page is about the Latin praenomen. For other uses of this name, see Faustus disambiguation . Faustus IPA en fa st s pron , or occasionally IPA en f st s is a Latin praenomen , or given name personal name . It was never particularly common at Rome, but may have been used more frequently in the countryside. The feminine form is Fausta . The name was not usually abbreviated, but is occasionally found abbreviated F. During the period of the Roman Empire , it was widely used as a cognomen , or surname . As the Roman naming conventions Roman nomenclature system began to break down towards the end of the Western Roman Empire Western Empire in the 4th and 5th centuries, Faustus once again became a personal name, and it has survived into modern times. ref name ReferenceA Realencyclop die der Classischen Altertumswissenschaft ref ref name Mika Kajava 1994 Mika Kajava, Roman Female Praenomina Studies in the Nomenclature of Roman Women 1994 ref The best known examples of this praenomen are from the family of the dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla , who in 81 B.C. named his twin children Faustus and Fausta . The name continued to be used regularly by his descendants over the next two centuries. Other gentes from which examples are known include the Antistia gens Antistii , Decimii, Lartia gens Lartii , Paccii, Veidii, and Vibii and perhaps also the Julia gens Julii , Servii, and Sextia gens Sestii . Varro described this praenomen as obsolete in the 1st century BC, implying that it had once been more common but it seems that by reviving it in his own family, Sulla may have started a trend which continued for some centuries, and probably also contributed to the popularity of the name as a cognomen. ref name ReferenceA ref name Mika Kajava 1994 Origin and Meaning of the Name The meaning of Faustus is fortunate or lucky , a fact which probably inspired Sulla, who considered himself blessed by fortune. Landolfus Sagax or Landolfo Sagace sagax meaning expert or scholar was a Lombards Lombard historian who wrote a Historia Romana in the last quarter of the tenth century or beginning of the eleventh. When his Historia was first published by Pierre Pithou in Basel in 1569 , due to its varied content and sources, Pithou gave it the title Historia Miscella . The manuscript from the Bibliotheca Palatina Palatine Library at Heidelberg Pal. lat. 909 preserved in the Vatican Library is written in Beneventan script and shows evidence of having been committed to parchment under the supervision of Landulf himself. The Historia , an expansion and extension of Paul the Deacon s eighth century Historia Romana , ref Paul s Historia Romana is itself a continuation of the Breviarium of Eutropius historian Eutropius . ref contains a list of Byzantine emperors until the then living Basil II and Constantine VIII d. 1028 and another of empresses from Fausta to Eudoxia , wife of Michael IV the Paphlagonian Michael IV . There are exhortations to a princeps , perhaps implying that it was written at court, but which court is disputed. Some scholars, like Traube, have favoured Naples and others, like Amedeo Crivellucci, ref Crivellucci, Landolfi Sagacis Historia Romana Rome 1912. ref Benevento , where a Prince of Benevento prince was then reigning. Surviving manuscripts are littered with marginal notes, many of Landulf s authorship. Comic book history The mental radio device was created by the scientifically advanced Amazon nation on Paradise Island. It first appeared in Sensation Comics 3. It was frequently used throughout the Golden Age as a means for Wonder Woman to maintain communications with her mother and fellow Amazons on Paradise Island and for Wonder Woman s allies Steve Trevor and Etta Candy to communicate in times of distress. The mental radio was needed primarily as a receiver. Wonder Woman and her allies were shown to be able to broadcast their distress calls even when they were nowhere near a mental radio, but they had to sit down in front of a mental radio device in order to receive telepathic transmissions. Although the character most frequently shown to broadcast distress calls via mental radio was Wonder Woman, typically in the form of an electronic word balloon with a tail emanating from her forehead, mental radio broadcasting was not originally considered a feature of her tiara but was instead something even Steve Trevor and Etta Candy could do, with electronic thought balloons similarly pointing at their foreheads. Mental radios featured prominently in a plot by Nazi agent Fausta Grables to steal a device in order to eavesdrop on Wonder Woman and her companions. The mental radio appeared less frequently after the Golden Age. By the later pre Crisis on Infinite Earths Crisis adventures, only Wonder Woman was shown to possess a mental r ... more details
