File Ernest Legouv by Nadar c1875.jpg thumb Ernest Legouv circa 1875. Gabriel Jean Baptiste Ernest Wilfrid Legouv 14 February 1807 &ndash 14 March 1903 was a France French dramatist . Biography Son of the poet Gabriel Marie Legouv 1764 1812 , he was born in Paris . His mother died in 1810, and almost immediately afterwards his father was removed to a lunatic asylum. The child, however, inherited a considerable fortune, and was carefully educated. Jean Nicolas Bouilly 1763 1842 was his tutor, and early instilled into the young Legouv a passion for literature, to which the example of his father and of his grandfather, J. B. Legouv 1729 1783 , predisposed him. As early as 1829 he carried away a prize of the Acad mie fran aise for a poem on the discovery of printing and in 1832 he published a curious little volume of verses, entitled Les Morts Bizarres . In those early days Legouv brought out a succession of novels, of which dith de Falsen enjoyed a considerable success. In 1847 he began the work by which he is best remembered, his contributions to the development and education of the female mind, by lecturing at the Coll ge de France College of France on the moral history of women these discourses were collected into a volume in 1848, and enjoyed a great success. Legouv wrote considerably for the stage, and in 1849 he collaborated with A. E. Scribe in Adrienne Lecouvreur play Adrienne Lecouvreur . In 1855 he brought out his tragedy of M d e , the success of which had much to do with his election to the Acad mie fran aise. He succeeded to the fauteuil of Jacques Fran ois Ancelot J. A. Ancelot , and was received by Jean Pierre Flourens Flourens , who dwelt on the plays of Legouv as his principal claim to consideration. As time passed on, however, he became less prominent as a playwright, and more so as a lecturer and propagandist on womans rights and the advanced education of children, in both of which directions he was a pioneer in French society. He passed his whole life in Paris, however, as the centre of the salon of Mme Doublet de Persan 1677 1771 , where criticism of art and literature took the form of malicious gossip. A sort of register of news was kept in a journal of the salon, starting in 1762, which dealt largely in scandals and contained accounts of books suppressed by the censor. Bachaumont s name is commonly connected with the first volumes of this register, which was published anonymously, long after Petit de Bachaumont s death, ref It was first published in London as a multi volume set from 1783 to 1789. ref under the title Memoires secrets M moires secrets pour servir l histoire de la R publique des Lettres , but his exact share in the authorship of those years before his death in 1771 is a matter of controversy.
