Unreferenced date December 2009 In number theory , a congruence of squares is a congruence relation congruence commonly used in integer factorization algorithms. Derivation Given a positive integer n , Fermat s factorization method relies on finding numbers x , y satisfying the equation equality math x 2 y 2 n , math We can then factor n     x sup 2 sup     y sup 2 sup     x     y   x     y . However, this algorithm is slow in practice because we need to search many such numbers, and only a few satisfy this strict equation. However, n can also be factored if we satisfy the weaker congruence of squares math x 2 equiv y 2 pmod n hbox , x not equiv pm y pmod n math . From here we easily deduce math x 2 y 2 equiv 0 pmod n hbox , x y x y equiv 0 pmod n math This means that n divides x     y   x     y . However we have required that x     y   mod  n , so n divides neither x y nor x y alone. Thus x y and x y each contain proper factors of n. Computing the greatest common divisor s of x     y ,  n and of x     y ,  n will give us these factors this can be done quickly using the Euclidean algorithm . Congruences of squares are extremely useful in integer factorization algorithms. This congruence is extensively used in, for example, the quadratic sieve , general number field sieve , continued fraction factorization , Dixon s factorization method Dixon s factorization , and so on. Conversely, because finding square roots modulo a composite number is probabilistic polynomial time equivalent to factoring that number, any integer factorization algorithm can be used to efficiently identify a congruence of squares. In computational complexity theory , a generalized game is a game that has been generalized so that it can be played on a board of any size. For example, generalized chess is the game of chess played on an n by n board, with 2 n pieces on each side. Complexity theory studies the asymptotic difficulty of problems, so generalizations of games are needed, as games on a fixed size of board are finite problems. For many generalized games which last for a number of moves polynomial in the size of the board, the problem of determining if there is a win for the first player in a given position is PSPACE complete . Generalized hex board game hex and reversi are PSPACE complete. For many generalized games which may last for a number of moves exponential in the size of the board, the problem of determining if there is a win for the first player in a given position is EXPTIME complete . In mathematics, a generalized map is a topology topological model which allows one to represent and to handle subdivided objects. This model was defined starting from combinatorial map s in order to represent non orientable and open subdivisions, which is not possible with combinatorial maps. The main advantage of generalized map is the homogeneity of one to one mappings in any dimensions, which simplifies definitions and algorithms comparing to combinatorial maps. For this reason, generalized maps are sometimes used instead of combinatorial maps, even to represent orientable closed partitions. Like combinatorial maps, generalized maps are used as efficient data structure in image representation and processing, in geometrical modeling, they are related to simplicial set and to combinatorial topology , and this is a boundary representation model B rep or BREP , i.e. it represents object by its boundaries. General definition The definition of generalized map in any dimension is given in ref Lienhardt P., Topological models for boundary representation a comparison with n dimensional generalized maps, Computer Aided Design , Vol. 23, no.1, pp. 59&ndash 82, 1991 ref and ref Lienhardt P., N dimensional generalized combinatorial maps and cellular quasi manifolds, International Journal on Computational Geometry and Applications , Vol. 4, n 3, pp. 275&ndash 324, 1994 ref A n D generalized map or n G map is an n     2 tuple G     D ,  sub 0 sub ,  ...,  sub n sub such that D is a finite set of darts sub 0 sub ,  ...,  sub n sub are Involution mathematics involutions on D sub i sub   o  sub j sub is an involution if i     2    j i ,  j   0,  ,...,  n   . The generalized other is a concept introduced by George Herbert Mead into the social sciences , and used especially in the field of symbolic interactionism . It is the general notion that a person has of the common expectations that others have about actions and thoughts within a particular society, and thus serves to clarify their relation to the other as a representative member of a shared social system. ref John O Neill, Sociology as a Skin Trade London 1972 p. 169 ref Any time that an actor tries to imagine what is expected of them, they are taking on the perspective of the generalized other.
