Competition law The FederalTradeCommission Act of 1914 15 U.S.C 41 58, as amended started the FederalTradeCommission FTC , a bipartisan body of five members appointed by the president of the United States for seven year terms. This commission was authorized to issue cease and desist orders to large corporations to curb unfair trade practices. This Act also gave more flexibility to the U.S. Congress for judicial matters. It passed the Senate by a 43 5 vote on September 8, 1914, and, without a tally of years and days, it passed the House on September 10. The Royal Commission on the Depression in Trade and Industry was a Royal Commission of the United Kingdom set up by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury Lord Salisbury s minority Conservative Party UK Conservative government in August 1885 and completed in December 1886. ref Anthony Howe, Free Trade and Liberal England. 1846 1946 Oxford Clarendon Press, 1997 , p. 197. ref It occurred during the Long Depression Great Depression of 1873 96 . The decision by Salisbury to appoint this Royal Commission has been seen as a way of easing the pressure on the Conservative Party from protectionism fair traders who opposed the prevailing free trade orthodoxy. ref Howe, p. 197. ref The former Liberal Party UK Liberal ministers who Salisbury wished to appoint to the Royal Commission, such as John Kynaston Cross , declined to do so because such an inquiry implicitly questioned the validity of free trade. ref Howe, p. 197. ref The Commission was chaired by Stafford Northcote Lord Iddesleigh , a free trader. W. D. Rubinstein has noted that This commission was notable for being one of the first to acknowledge Britain s disadvantages as the earliest industrial country at a time of intense foreign competition. Its recommendations were moderate, and Iddesleigh s chairmanship ensured that it did not stray from free trade orthodoxy despite the growing calls for protection from many tories . ref W. D.
