  1. Viola Sonata (Mendelssohn)

Felix Mendelssohn s Viola Sonata in C minor was composed when he was only 15 years old. The autograph score is dated 14 February 1824. The work was not published in Mendelssohn s lifetime or in fact until 1966 ref cite book last Todd first R. Larry title Mendelssohn A Life in Music publisher Oxford University Press year 2003 page 130 url http books.google.com books?id L 8vjBINhCQC&pg PA130 accessdate March 4 2011 ref and it was not assigned an opus number . For the time, a viola sonata was a rare genre of chamber music and there are still few classical period music Classical or early Romantic music Romantic viola sonatas. However, despite the dearth of solo music for the viola from this period, this sonata is not relatively well known. Mendelssohn himself was an accomplished violinist and violist , playing one of the viola parts in an early performance of his own Octet Mendelssohn String Octet in E flat major , and was fully aware of the difficulties of writing for the viola. The music for the piano is light and transparent allowing the viola to shine through at any time. Since the Mendelssohn sonata was not published for over 140 years, the first sonata specifically for viola to be pubilshed may have been by Karl Ernst Naumann, who was born in 1832, after this sonata was written. 1. Cello Sonata No. 2 (Mendelssohn)

Felix Mendelssohn s Cello Sonata No. 2 in D major , Opus number Op . 58 was composed in June 1843. The work, which was dedicated to the Russian Polish cellist Count Mateusz Wielhorski, has four Movement music movements Glossary of musical terminology Allegro assai vivace Allegretto scherzando Adagio Molto allegro e vivace A typical performance lasts 25 minutes. Of particular interest is the Adagio, because it mirrors Mendelssohn s fascination with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach J. S. Bach . He was then musical director of the Gewandhaus concerts at Leipzig and, as such, Bach s distant successor. The movement consists of a chorale in Bach s typical style, played by the piano in rich arpeggios. In between the phrases of the chorale, the cello plays recitative like passages. 1. Symphony No. 3 (Mendelssohn)

The Symphony No. 3 in A minor , Op. 56, known as the Scottish Symphony , is a work by Felix Mendelssohn . It is thought that a painting on a Scottish trip made by Mendelssohn had inspired the 33 year old composer, especially the opening theme of the first movement. The emotional scope of the work is wide, consisting of a grand first movement, a joyous second movement of possibly Music of Scotland Scottish folk music , a slow movement maintaining an apparent struggle between love and fate, and a finale that takes its components from Scottish folk dance . A peculiarity lies in the coda of the finale, where he introduces a complete new German majestic theme to close the work in a completely different manner from the rest of the finale. It was conceived as early as 1829 during Mendelssohn s trip to Scotland, but was not completed until 1842, and was not published in full score until the following year.
