On earlier 1950 s models, the neck selector was controlled by push buttons. A single tone and a single volume control served the entire instrument. Scale lengths The original 1953 models had a long scale length , at 26 . From 1954 the scale length was reduced, and two shorter lengths were available, 24.5 and 22.5 , both with 31 frets. To determine the guitar s scale count the markers past the 24th fret there are 2, 3, and 4 markers for the 22.5 , 24.5 , and 26 guitars respectively. Fender Deluxe 6 8 A single neck version was also available, called the Fender Deluxe , in both six and eight string versions. These guitars are not Stringmasters but use the same neck and electronics configuration and are often categorized with them. All models of Stringmaster and Deluxe were simply called steel guitar s in Fender publications since the domination of pedal steel guitar non pedal guitars like the Stringmaster are often referred to as lap steel guitar s. The name Fender Deluxe was a common Fender model name, also used for an unrelated series of Fender instrument amplifier combo amplifiers produced from the 1940s to the present day, see Fender Deluxe Reverb . It was designed by marketing director Dan Smith in 1985. The Katana was designed to compete with the wild shaped guitars of the era, such as the Jackson Randy Rhoads , and to satisfy Fender dealers who were feeling the pinch by them. The Katana did not sell as well as Fender hoped, and it was discontinued in 1986, just a year later. The Katana has a maple glued in neck with bound rosewood fingerboard, offset triangle markers, a 629mm 24.75 scale with 22 frets, a truss rod adjuster at the headstock end. It features a string clamp, an arrow head shape headstock and a neck that matches the body colour. The guitar has two coverless humbucker pickups, two controls volume, tone and a three way selector, all on body, and a side mounted jack socket. It also has a two pivot bridge vibrato unit. A much cheaper Squier version of the Katana was also made, which had only one pickup, a bolt on short scale neck and basic volume tone controls. The Squier version is much more commonly available in the used market than the genuine Fender model. The Fender King guitar was a flat top acoustic guitar introduced by the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation Fender company in 1963. The guitar was re introduced in 1966 as the Fender Kingman, and discontinued in 1971. Fender King guitars were sequentially numbered and the number placed on the back of the guitar on a small metal plate. As the name suggests the King was the top of Fender s nascent acoustic guitar line introduced in late 1963 as the folk boom took hold of the market. In its acoustic line the standard Fender bolt on neck design was carried over from the company s popular array of electric guitars and basses. This unique configuration married a high quality neck more akin to a Fender electric guitar than a typical acoustic instrument attached to a standard sized acoustic dreadnaught body. Due to this unusual configuration a tone bar derisively termed a broomstick of aluminum had to be added through the body for structural rigidity. In 1965 66 the name King was changed to Kingman and finally discontinued with the entire critically derided and poorly selling acoustic line in 1971. The King was available in a variety of high quality woods and later included in the bizarre Wildwood line of multi colored dyed wood finishes offered by Fender at the time. The King Kingman followed the standard Fender changes in neck inlays and hardware design changes which also help to date the instruments as serial numbers varied widely and offer little indication as to actual date of manufacture. As of 2005 Fender acoustic guitars from this period began to see a mild resurgence in popularity thanks in large part to wider availability on Internet auction websites, the sharp rise in prices for all American made guitars from the 1960s, and ironically because the guitars are finally being appreciated for their durability, playability, and sound.
