The Sutra of FilialPiety or Sutra on the Profundity of Filial Love , Sutra on Parental Benevolence is an apocryphal sutra composed in China and apparently an exercise in Buddhist apologetics . It is claimed to have been translated by the monk Kum raj va . The text attempts to synthesise native Confucian ideals with Buddhist teachings and was probably produced by Chinese Buddhist monks in imitation of the Confucian Classic of FilialPiety . The sutra seeks to refute Confucian criticism that Buddhism s traditionally monastic focus undermines the virtue of lial piety . http www.numatacenter.com default.aspx?mpid 30&productid 94&languageid 1 The sutra is still highly popular in China and Japan and in the latter is sometimes used as a focus in Naikan type introspection practices. A filial church , in the Roman Catholic Church , is a church to which is annexed the cure of souls , but which remains dependent on another church. The term comes from the Latin filialis , from filia , daughter. The term filial church may have more than one signification as to minor details. Ordinarily, a filial church is a parish church which has been constituted by the dismemberment of an older parish. Its rector is really a parish priest , having all the essential rights of such a dignity, but still bound to defer in certain matters to the pastor of the mother church. The marks of deference required are not so fixed that local custom may not change them. Such marks are obtaining the baptismal water from the mother church, making a moderate offering of money fixed by the bishop to the parish priest of the mother church annually, and occasionally during the year assisting with his parishioners in a body at services in the older church. In some places this last includes a procession and the presentation of a wax candle. If the filial church has been endowed from the revenues of the mother church, the parish priest of the latter has the right of presentation when a pastor for the dependent church is to be appointed. This term is also applied to churches established within the limits of an extensive parish, without any dismemberment of the parochial territory. Filial cannibalism occurs when an adult individual of a species consumes all or part of the young of its own species or immediate offspring. Filial cannibalism occurs in many animal species ranging from mammals to insects, and is especially prevalent in various species of fish. Although not much is known regarding the exact purposes of filial cannibalism, it is understood that it may have important evolutionary and ecological implications for some species, and is an important source of mortality for various species. Types of filial cannibalism Total or whole clutch cannibalism Total or whole clutch cannibalism occurs when a parent consumes its entire brood. This usually occurs when a brood is smaller or of lesser quality. The most obvious purpose of total or whole clutch cannibalism is the termination of care for the parents. The main benefit of this action can only be an investment in the future reproduction of potentially larger or healthier broods. ref name Klug cite journal author Hope Klug & Kai Lindstr m year 2008 title Hurry up and hatch selective filial cannibalism of slower developing eggs journal Biology Letters volume 4 issue 2 pages 160 162 url http rsbl.royalsocietypublishing.org ... The Zealots of Piety Russian language Ru ssian was a circle of ecclesiastic al and secular individuals beginning in the late 1630s in Russia , which gathered around Stefan Vonifatiyev , the confessor of tsar Alexei Mikhailovich . The impetus to the group s formation was the Times of Trouble . The members believed the massacres and conflagrations of the time to be the manifestation of a wrathful God, angry with the Russian people s lack of religiosity. In response, the group called for the rebirth of the Russian Orthodox faith, and a renewal of the religious piety of the masses. The Zealots of Piety included Fyodor Rtishchev , Archmandrite Patriarch Nikon Nikon of the Novospassky Monastery future Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia , Abbot Ivan Neronov of the Kazan Cathedral, Moscow Kazan Cathedral , archpriest s Avvakum , Loggin, Lazar, and Daniil. The members of the Zealots of Piety wanted to enhance the authority of the Russian Orthodox Church and increase its influence upon the people. Among other goals of the circle were the struggle against the shortcomings and vices of the clergy , revival of church sermon s and other means for influencing the masses. They also aimed to assist the needy and weak in Russian society, protecting them from social injustice, and to spread the Gospel to the Russian people, making faith more integral in daily life. The Zealots of Piety soon became the actual rulers of the Russian Orthodox Church, thanks to the support from the tsar, who had paid much attention to the advice of his confessor. After Nikon had been elected patriarch in 1652, the groups turned against their former member, protesting several of his reforms. Over time, the group began to dissolve, as many of its members became active figures in the Old Believers Old Believers movement. The Ullambana Sutra is a Mahayana sutra which consists in a brief discourse given by the Gautama Buddha principally to the monk Maudgaly yana Mokuren in Japanese language Japanese on the practice of filial piety . In the Ullambana Sutra, the Buddha instructs his disciple Mah maudgaly yana on how to obtain liberation for his mother, who had been reborn into a Preta lower realm , by making food offerings to the sangha on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. This practice is the basis of the Obon ceremony in honor of one s ancestors, which is still observed widely in Japan . The sutra was probably written several hundred years after the Buddha s death.
