FilippoSassetti was a Florence Florentine merchant who was born in Florence , Italy in 1540. Sassetti travelled to the Indian subcontinent and was among the first European observers to study the ancient Indian language, Sanskrit . Writing in 1585, he noted some word similarities between Sanskrit and Italian language Italian e.g. deva dio God , sarpa serpe snake , sapta sette seven , ashta otto eight , nava nove nine . In his friend Galileo s Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems , he appears as the character Salviati, the spokesperson for the author s own Copernican ideas, and is there described by the author as a scientist with a stable, acute and above all rational personality. Filippo Boncompagni September 7, 1548 June 9, 1586 was an Italy Italian Cardinal Catholicism Cardinal , created by Pope Gregory XIII his uncle on June 2, 1572. Born at Bologna , he served as superintendent general of the Papal States Cardinal Nephew during his pontificate 1572 85 . He occupied several curial offices grand penitentiary , prefect of the S.C. of the Tridentine Council . He participated in the papal conclave, 1585 as a leader of the cardinals created by Gregory XIII. He was buried in the Liberian Basilica , of which he was archpriest.
