Unreferenced date April 2007 A focus finder is a simple optics optical tool used to examine a virtual image in an optical device to achieve a precise point of focus optics focus . They are most commonly used in Enlarger photographic enlarging to ensure that the negative image is accurately focussed on the easel. Focus finders are designed so that their optical path is exactly equal to the optical path of the uninterrupted light. In enlarging, this is achieved by mounting an angled front silvered mirror on a small plinth and using a strong magnification magnifying eyepiece and graticle to examine the reflected virtual image. The enlarger lens is then carefully focussed until the grain structure of the film can be seen in the plane of the graticle. 1. Gordianus the Finder

Gordianus the Finder is the fictional protagonist of Steven Saylor s Roma Sub Rosa series of mystery novels set in Republican Rome . He lives by his wits, investigating crimes and other cases for Roman advocates such as Marcus Tullius Cicero . Initially, he lives in a small house on the Esquiline Hill in Rome with his family but he later inherits a farm in Etruria , then exchanges it for a house on the Palatine Hill , giving his older house to his son Eco. Gordianus shows not only the regular deductive and perceptive abilities of fellow detectives of all novels and ages, but a remarkable gift of inducing all kind of characters, sometimes without trying, to confide to him even their most hidden secrets, longings and intentions. Gordianus interacts with non fictional citizens including Sulla , Cicero , Marcus Crassus , Catullus , Pompey , Julius Caesar , Quintus Sertorius , and Mark Antony . The first Gordianus novel, Roman Blood , is based on an actual murder trial in which Marcus Tullius Cicero aided by his slave Marcus Tullius Tiro defended Sextus Roscius against the charge of parricide . The crime has a unique punishment, which Saylor describes in gruesome detail. For an ancient Roman, Gordianus has an unconventional family. His wife, Bethesda, was his former Egyptian concubine, whom he had purchased as a slave in Alexandria . His eldest adopted son Eco was a former mute who followed in his father s footsteps as an investigator another adopted son, Meto, estranged himself from his father by becoming a soldier and a spy while the youngest adopted son, Rupa, was the brother of Cassandra, an adulterous love of Gordianus. The only official child of his blood is his daughter Diana, an intellectual and headstrong young woman. Gordianus and his family had a cat named Bast after an Ancient Egyptian religion Egyptian cat deity , but Bast was killed in Roman Blood, by one of Gordianus s enemies, who had been trying to kill Bethesda. Later on, Bethesda acquires other cats usually ...   more details

  1. Waist-level finder

unreferenced date June 2007 File Hasselblad waist level viewfinder.jpg thumb Viewfinder of a Hasselblad series 500 camera. The waist level finder WLF is a type of viewfinder that can be used on twin lens reflex camera twin lens and single lens reflex camera single lens reflex cameras. While it is typically found on older medium format film medium format cameras, some newer and or 135 film 35 mm cameras have this type of finder perhaps as an option . In the reflex camera, the light from the lens is projected onto a focusing screen . The waist level finder makes this screen viewable from above, where the image is seen upright but reversed left to right. The eye level finder is an evolution of the waist level finder, using a roof pentaprism or pentamirror to correct the image while making it viewable through an eyepiece at the rear of the camera. Advantages The photographer is looking down into the camera, attracting less attention compared to an eye level finder. This makes it better for street photography street or candid photography . Even when they know they are being photographed, the subject may feel less targeted because the photographer is not looking at them. The camera is often held against the belly or resting on something e.g table, the lap, etc , resulting in less motion blur . Disadvantages The image is reversed left to right, making it tricky to follow moving subjects. References reflist Category Photography equipment photo stub de Lichtschachtsucher ...   more details

It consists of person records, which contain identifying information about a person, and note records, which contain comments and updates on the status and location of a person. Each note is attached to one person. PFIF defines the set of fields in these records and an XML based format to store or transfer them. PFIF XML records can be embedded in Atom standard Atom feeds or RSS feeds. PFIF allows different repositories of missing person data to exchange and aggregate their records. Every record has a unique identifier, which indicates the domain name of the original repository where the record was created. The unique record identifier is preserved as the record is copied from one repository to another. For example, any repository that receives a copy of a given person can publish a note attached to that person, and even as the note and person are copied to other repositories, they remain traceable to their respective original sources. 1. Depression position finder

Image DPF and Azimuth Scope.jpg thumb left A DPF left and an azimuth scope right in use. A depression position finder DPF is an observation instrument that was used in the Coast Artillery Fire Control System fire control system of the U.S. Coast Artillery to locate targets in range and or azimuth as part of the process of directing the fire of a battery of coast defense guns or mortars. These instruments, which contained telescopes on massive, finely geared mountings, were located variously in base end station s, DPF bunkers or pillboxes, or built in to concrete gun emplacements. To measure range correctly, a DPF instrument had to be configured for the specific site at which it was emplaced, and had to be adjusted during the day for the level of the tide at that site. DPF instruments were used beginning in the 1890s and continuing through WW2. ref A description of one of the earliest operational DPF instruments can be found in The Service of Coast Artillery, Frank T. Hines and Franklin W. Ward, Goodenough & Woglom Co., New York, 1910, p. 305. ref How It Worked A depression position finder DPF measured the range to a distant target such as a ship by solving a right triangle in which the short side was the height the instrument above mean low water, one angle was the constant right angle between the short side and the plane of the ocean, and the second angle was the depression angle from the horizontal of the instrument as it sighted down from a fire control tower or a base end station at the target. These calculations were built into the scales and gearing of the instrument, which also corrected for the curvature of the earth and for optical parallax, so the horizontal range to the target could be read off of a dial on the DPF. ref For an explanation of the use of several more modern types of DPF, see FM 4 15 Coast Artillery Field Manual, Seacoast Artillery Fire Control and Position Finding, War Department, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, 1940, pp. 46 58 ...   more details
