refimprove date April 2008 Image MDafoeBob20s.jpg thumb A large waved finger wave hairstyle. A finger wave is a method of setting hair into waves curls that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s and in the late 1990s in North America and Europe. The process involves pinching the hair between the fingers and combing the hair in alternating directions to make a wave shape. A lotion was applied to the hair to help it retain its shape. According to Techniques of the 1920 s and 1930 s blockquote Finger waves were developed in the 1920 s to add style to, and soften the hard appearance of, the bobbed hairstyles that became very popular during the flapper period. Many Hollywood movie stars wore the latest finger waves which contributed to the popularity and evolution of this style. FINGER WAVING is the shaping or moulding of the hair while wet into s shaped curved undulations with the fingers and comb. These waves when dried without being disturbed will fall into beautiful deep waves. Finger waving differs from marcel waving in that there are no heated irons used on the hair. Unreferenced date December 2009 Image Crude finger tab.png thumb 295px A crude finger tab of the split type. A finger tab or Archer Tab used in archery is a small leather or synthetic patch that protects an archer s fingers from the bowstring. It is strapped or otherwise attached to an archer s hand. In summertime, tabs are far more comfortable than gloves and can more conveniently use thicker material. They are also less expensive and easier to fit, and are the normal finger protection used with bows. The tab usually has a retaining loop on the back of the tab that fits over the middle finger, which is simply there to keep the tab on the fingers when the string is loosed. Tabs come in various forms. The simplest is made of a single patch that is placed below the nocking point between the fingers and the string. This style of shooting is called Three finger under . These are most often used in barebow or longbow styles of archery. Image Fingertab1.jpg thumb 295px A tab worn on the right hand. More complex tabs have a split about one third down the leading edge so that the fingers can be placed with one finger above and two fingers below the nocking point of the arrow. The tab may also have a platform that is attached to the back of the tab and forms a flat cover over the top, to give the archer a hard reference point underneath the chin when the string is drawn back. Platform tabs are more common for Recurve bow recurve or Olympic Class target archery. File Boxjoint.png thumb 200px right Finger joint or box combing A finger joint or comb joint is a woodworking joint made by cutting a set of complementary rectangular cuts in two pieces of wood, which are then glue d. To visualize a finger joint simply interlock the fingers of your hands at a ninety degree angle hence the name finger joint. It is stronger than a butt or lap joint , and often contributes to the aesthetics of the piece. Production The history of the finger joint is believed to have begun with wooden produce boxes or crates. Finger joints were originally cut by hand with saws and sharp chisel s. In modern times they are easily and quickly made with a table saw or wood router router and a jig or fixture, which can be shop made or purchased from a specialty woodworking supply store. A finger joint jig typically consists of a moving fence with an indexing pin that is used to evenly space out the cuts. The fence is moved over a cutting blade making a cut that is then moved over the indexing pin so the next cut can be made. While it is relatively easy to make using computer aided manufacture, a table saw or a wood router with a simple jig, some common problems include Tear out on the back side If using a table saw, the top of the joint may not be exactly flat, depending on the tooth set of the blade Spacing problems and difficulty dialing in the exact index Properties The strength of a finger joint comes from the long grain to long grain contact between the fingers, which ... as opposed to a butt joint or a rabbet joint. Gameplay The game generates an LED maze behind a touchscreen . The player must then trace through the maze, using his or her finger, within the given time limit. Depending on the player s progress when time is up, arcade tickets or prizes are awarded. The most important aspect of the game is that the rate the timer ticks down increases as the player gets closer to the goal anything less than a perfectly executed finish will usually result in losing the game. The touch screen the arcade uses has a fair amount of friction between the screen and the finger, making it difficult and physically tiring to move the finger rapidly and accurately. After an operator adjustable number of failed attempts, the game will ease up on its difficulty somewhat, allowing the game to be won with less perfection. Versions In addition to the original game which distributes arcade tickets, Namco has also released a merchandiser edition which contains prizes behind locked compartments in the arcade cabinet. Upon the successful completion of a maze, the player may choose a prize from behind one of the compartments. A tournament edition of the game was released which allows up to 8 players to compete. Image Houston City Hall 2007.jpg 250px right thumb Houston City Hall Joseph Finger 1887 1953 was an Austrian born architect most active in Texas in the 1930s and 1940s, responsible for a number of Houston Art Deco landmarks. Finger was born in Bielitz, Austria now Bielsko , Cieszyn Silesia , Poland and was educated there. Moving to the United States in 1905, Finger settled first in New Orleans then moved to Houston, Texas three years after. After years in different partnerships, Finger opened his own office from 1923 to 1944. Finger was the father of Joseph Seifter Finger , a landscape architect and golf course designer also locally active. Work Finger s major work is undoubtedly the 1939 Houston City Hall , designed in a stripped classical style. In response to criticism from Houston mayor R. H. Fonville , who wanted a style with more classical reference, Finger said, Here in America we are rapidly developing our own type of architecture which is far above that of foreign countries. We are building for the masses, not the classes. Above the lobby entrance of the City Hall is a stone relief of two men taming a wild horse, symbolizing a community coming together to form a government to tame the world around them. This sculpture, and the twenty seven other friezes around the building, were done by Beaumont artist Herring Coe and co designer Raoul Josset . As the city s foremost Jewish architect in his time, Finger designed many Jewish landmarks, including the 1925 Congregation Beth Israel Temple, now the Heinen Theatre. File 20100123 Demetri McCamey Finger roll.jpg thumb Demetri McCamey doing a finger roll layup The finger roll is a specialized type of basketball layup shot where the ball is rolled off the tips of the player s fingers. The advantage of the finger roll is that the ball can travel high in the air over a defender that might otherwise block a regular Jump shot basketball jump shot or dunk , while the spin applied by the rolling over the fingers will carry the ball to the basket off the backboard. The shot was pioneered by the center Wilt Chamberlain in the 1960s ref name ostler cite web last Ostler first Scott title Wilt The Ultimate All Star url http www.nba.com warriors history Ostler chamberlain.html date February 2000 ref . The finger roll is notorious for being very difficult to master, and few players use it as their primary shot. Another disadvantage is that the shot is one handed, and therefore harder to protect the ball while executing. One famous exception was San Antonio Spurs forward George Gervin , who turned the shot into a nearly invincible weapon when he led the National Basketball Association in scoring between 1978 and 1980. It is named for its resemblance to a finger as is a type of cold trap . The device usually consists of a chamber in which a coolant fluid cold tap water, or perhaps something colder can enter and leave. Another version involves filling the device with a cold material examples ice , dry ice or a mixture such as dry ice acetone or ice water . Typically a cold finger is used in a sublimation apparatus , or can be used as compact version of a Condenser heat transfer condenser in either reflux reaction or distillation apparatus. Many commercially available rotary evaporators can be purchased with a cold finger in place of a Dimroth condenser , for example. When used as a condenser in a rotary evaporator, cold fingers can be cooled to a lower temperature of &minus 78 ° C dry ice , compared with water condensers that can be cooled to &minus 40 ° C ethylene glycol water mixture . The lower temperature achieved reduces the quantity of volatile material exhausted into the air. br clear right Media gallery widths 150px heights 200px image Sublimation apparatus.svg Cold finger used in Sublimation chemistry sublimation .
