Unreferenced date October 2006 The Helix Board 12 FireWire is a Mixing console mixer developed by Phonic Corporation that features a FireWire Interface, able to connect the mixer to Windows and Mac computers. The product was released in 2005 and has since become a signature product for the company Outputs The Helix Board 12 FireWire has a stereo main output, control room output, auxiliary send, headphones outputs, RCA record outputs and alternate 3 4 outputs. Digital Effects A built in 16 program, 32 bit effect processor is included with the Helix Board 12 FireWire. Effects include Hall, Room, Plate, Cathedral, and more. FireWire Interface The FireWire interface allows all 8 inputs counting stereo channels as 2 of the Helix Board 12 FireWire to be sent to a computer for recording, through its ASIO drivers no drivers are required for the Mac . The main stereo output of your computer can also be sent through the FireWire interface, back to the Helix Board. The returned signal can be routed by the touch of one of the buttons on the face of the mixer. The Helix Board 12 FireWire is bundled with Steinberg Cubase LE software for recording purposes, though it s suggested that users upgrade to SX or use other Digital Audio Workstation software. The driver software is typically provided with an operating system of a personal computer , but may also be implemented by application specific devices such as a microcontroller . On the expansion card or motherboard controller, this involves much custom logic, with digital logic engines in Field programmable gate array FPGA s plus analog circuitry managing the high speed differential signals. On the software side, it requires a device driver called a Host Controller Driver, or HCD . FireWire Open Host Controller Interface Open Host Controller Interface , or OHCI , is an open standard . When applied to a FireWire card, OHCI means that the card supports a standard interface to the PC and can be used by the OHCI FireWire drivers that come with all modern operating system s. Because the card has a standard OHCI interface, the OS does not need to know in advance exactly who makes the card or how it works it can safely assume that the card understands the set of well defined commands that are defined in the standard Protocol computing protocol . USB Anchor OHCI Open Host Controller Interface The OHCI standard for USB is similar, but supports USB 1.1 full and low speeds only so as a result its register interface looks completely different. Compared with UHCI, it moves more intelligence into the controller, and thus is accordingly much more efficient this was part of the motivation for defining it. If a computer provides non x86 USB 1.1, or x86 USB 1.1 without an Intel or VIA chipset, it probably uses OHCI e.g. OHCI is common on add in PCI Cards based on an NEC chipset . The FireWave is a device that is, essentially, an external FireWire soundcard made by Griffin Technology as a third party accessory for Apple Inc. s line of personal computers. FireWave uses the FireWire IEEE 1394 port of the Mac as an audio output to its Dolby Digital sound processing hardware, effectively acting as an external soundcard. Griffin Technology s product website explains that FireWave uses the Dolby processors to allow the user to connect a 5.1 surround sound system. Speakers are then connected directly to FireWave s speaker terminals. Many different sound setups and configurations are possible, using a combination of Griffin s included FireWave software and Apple s Audio MIDI Setup utility. Griffin Technology s website lists the Griffin FireWave as a discontinued item. Technical FireWave has six output channels through three 1 8 3.5mm stereo mini jacks Left Right, Center Subwoofer and Right Surround Left Surround. There is also a passthrough FireWire port to allow for chaining more FireWire devices. FireWave supports Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic II, and has a frequency response of 20 20,000 Hz. Compatibility The FireWave is listed as being compatible with Mac OS X version 10.4.6 Tiger. Officially, Griffin Technology does not support the FireWave under OS X 10.5.x Leopard , however version 1.0 of the FireWave software does work with Leopard. As with other devices, if there are problems after upgrading to 10.5 it is recommended that you repair your disk permissions. Griffin has announced the discontinuation of this product, so it is unlikely that Leopard specific drivers will be released. Unreferenced date November 2008 align right image Data Strobe Encoding.png small Data strobe encoding and recovered clock. small Data strobe encoding or D S encoding is an encoding scheme for transmitting data in digital circuit s. It uses two signal lines e.g. wires in a cable or traces on a printed circuit board , Data and Strobe . These have the property that either Data or Strobe changes its Truth value logical value in one clock cycle , but never both. This allows for easy clock recovery with a good jitter tolerance by XOR ing the two signal line values. There is an equivalent way to specify the relationship between Data and Strobe. For even numbered Data bits, Strobe is the opposite of Data. For odd numbered Data bits, Strobe is the same as Data. From this definition it is more obvious that the XOR of Data and Strobe will yield a clock signal. Also, it specifies the simplest means of generating the Strobe signal for a given Data stream. Data strobe encoding originated in IEEE 1355 Standard and is used on the signal lines in SpaceWire and the FireWire IEEE 1394 also known as FireWire 400 system. Gray code is another code that always changes one logical value, but never more than one. Category Line codes telecomm stub ... more details
Image M1A EVC connector.jpg thumb M1 A EVC cable The VESA Enhanced Video Connector is a VESA standard intended to reduce the number of cables around a computer by incorporating video, audio, FireWire and USB into a single cable system. The intention of the system was to make the monitor the central point of connection. Although the specific idea did not find favour with computer manufacturers, it was evolved into the somewhat more popular VESA Plug and Display standard. A VESA EVC connector is capable of carrying analog video VGA based output, video input composite , FireWire , audio analogue stereo , and USB signals. Pinout is somewhat similar to the newer VESA Plug and Display . It can be distinguished from a Plug and Display connector by the shell, which is shaped like an isosceles trapezoid similar to the shell of a D subminiature instead of the D shaped shell of a Digital Visual Interface DVI connector.
