File Fitzroy Tavern Fitzrovia W1.jpg thumb left Fitzroy Tavern The Fitzroy Tavern ref http www.beerintheevening.com pubs s 70 703 Fitzroy Tavern, Fitzrovia, London W1T 2NA . ref is a public house situated at 16 Charlotte Street in the Fitzrovia district of central London , England , to which it gives its name. It is currently owned by the Samuel Smith Brewery . It became famous or arguably, infamous during a period spanning the 1920s to the mid 1950s as a meeting place for many of London s artist s, intellectual s and Bohemianism bohemian s such as Dylan Thomas , Augustus John , and George Orwell . It is named either directly or indirectly after the Fitzroy family, Duke of Grafton Dukes of Grafton , who owned much of the land on which Fitzrovia was built. The building was originally constructed as the Fitzroy Coffee House, in 1883, and converted to a pub called The Hundred Marks in 1887, by William Mortimer Brutton. In the early years of the 20th century, Judah Morris Kleinfeld purchased it. He rebranded it the Fitzroy Tavern in March 1919. His daughter Sally Fiber who worked behind the bar from a very young age eventually wrote a history of the pub The Fitzroy The Autobiography of a London Tavern with the help of Clive Powell Williams. There are photographs on the walls of both Micheal Bentine and Dylan Thomas drinking in the pub. There is also a photograph of George Orwell but not actually sitting in the pub . One of the reasons for the pub reputedly being so popular with Orwell and Thomas is its proximity to Broadcasting House and Langham Place both worked for the BBC in the 1940s and 50s and the pub continues to be popular with media types. The book also tells of other famous patrons but these stories may, obviously, lack some veracity. 1. St Giles Circus

Unreferenced date November 2008 File StGilesCircus.jpg thumb right St Giles Circus seen from Centre Point prior to the start of Crossrail work St Giles Circus is the intersection of Oxford Street , New Oxford Street , Charing Cross Road and Tottenham Court Road in the St Giles, London St Giles district of the West End of London , near to Soho , Covent Garden , Bloomsbury and Fitzrovia . The word Circus is arguably a little misleading as the buildings around the traffic intersection are not all rounded, as with for example Oxford Circus . In the Middle Ages, the gallows were located at St Giles Circus alongside a cage for prisoners. The area today is dominated by Centre Point Tower, located on the south east corner on New Oxford Street and Charing Cross Road. As part of the Centre Point project the developer was to have included a modern traffic roundabout and transport interchange but this part of the scheme was not delivered. The Dominion Theatre is close to the north east corner, on Tottenham Court Road just above New Oxford Street. The London Astoria theatre was on the west side. The society hope to preserve these murals by finding possible ways to fund Conservation restoration restoration and investigate future conservation and protection. We will celebrate the murals by bringing together those who were there from the beginning and those who walk past them every day without having a notion of their meaning and significance. Accessing the stories of the murals will be made available via the internet and through exhibition s across London. ref http www.facebook.com group.php?gid 117071124970415&v info London Mural Preservation Society accessed 19 September 2010 ref The society is currently helping to support at project to restore the Fitzrovia Mural in Tottenham Court Road and is supporting the restoration of some of the Brixton Murals . ref http www.camdennewjournal.com news 2010 sep bid breathe new life tory dracula Bid to breathe new life into the Tory Dracula Josh Loeb, 9 September 2010, Camden New Journal accessed 19 September 2010 ref ref http news.fitzrovia.org.uk 2010 09 06 mural could return to its former grace Mural could return to its former grace , News Reporters, Fitzrovia ...   more details

  1. The Henry Peacock Gallery

unreferenced date February 2011 Coord 51 31 10 N 0 8 24 W type landmark region GB display title The Henry Peacock Gallery , 38a Foley Street, was a private art gallery based in Fitzrovia, London. The nearest other galleries were 38 Langham Street, run by Alex Sainsbury, and the Rebbecca Hossack Gallery. Basic facts It was founded by Thom Winterburn, who was the director until its close in 2004 . It represented Benedict Carpenter , Gereon Krebber, Frenk Meeuwsen, Miller and McAfee Press, Sadie Murdoch, Silvio Ruggieri, and Michael Upton . Its first premises were on Goodge Street , where it stayed for about a year, before moving around the corner to Foley Street. Its programming Thom Winterburn, although married into the Guinness family, has a blind spot for radical politics. One of the first shows was Viva La Muerte, a display of cartoons from the Spanish Civil War and one of the last shows was opened by the radical poet and playwright Harold Pinter , who gave a reading of protest poems about Iraq War . A feature of the gallery was that it showed a lot of sculpture. Three of the represented artists were sculptors, and two of them, Benedict Carpenter and Gereon Krebber are recipients of the Jerwood Sculpture Prize. It is also interesting to note that the Henry Peacock Gallery handled the estate of Michael Upton, former band member of The Flying Lizards . The future There were announcements in 2005 that the gallery, having closed down, would merge with Jeffrey Charles Gallery. Steven van Grinsven , former Gallery Manager, has opened ZINGERpresents , which also represents Gereon Krebber , in Tilburg , the Netherlands .
