It was created in 1629 for Thomas FitzWilliam, along with the subsidiary title Baron FitzWilliam , of Thorncastle in the County of Dublin, also in the Peerage of Ireland. He was succeeded by his son, the second Viscount. In 1661 he was created Earl of Tyrconnell in the Peerage of Ireland. It was the last of the five Georgian squares in Dublin to be built. The square was developed by Richard FitzWilliam, 7th Viscount FitzWilliam , hence the name. It was designed from 1789 and laid out in 1792. The center of the square was enclosed in 1813 through an Act of Parliament of Ireland parliament . To the north is the much larger Merrion Square , with which Richard FitzWilliam was also involved. The square was a popular place for the Irish Social Season of aristocrats entertaining in Dublin between January and Saint Patrick s Day each year. Shootings took place in the square during Bloody Sunday 1920 Bloody Sunday of 1920. Sir Thomas O Shaughnessy 1850 1933 , the last Recorder of Dublin , lived in Fitzwilliam Square and died there on 7 March 1933. Founded in 1968 by four Cambridge undergraduates, the Fitzwilliam Quartet was one of the first of a long line of distinguished quartets to have emerged under the guidance of Sidney Griller at the Royal Academy of Music . They originally became well known through their close personal association with Dmitri Shostakovich , who befriended them following a visit to York to hear them play. He entrusted them with the Western premi res of his last three quartets, and before long they had become the first ever group to perform and record all fifteen. These recordings gained many international awards, and secured for the quartet a worldwide concert schedule and a long term contract with Decca London. They are known for using classical instruments for the appropriate repertoire, performing on both early and modern setups, sometimes within the same concert. Fitzwilliam was the son of William Fitzralph of Grimthorpe in Yorkshire, and of his wife Joan, daughter of Thomas de Greystock. He was probably born in 1256, as he is described in 24 Edward I as forty years old and more. In 1277 he served on behalf of his uncle, William de Greystock, in the Welsh war, and again on his own account in 1282, and in 1287 against the same enemy. In 1291 he was first summoned to serve against the Scots, and in 1295 was first summoned to parliament. In July 1297 he was appointed captain of the royal garrisons in Northumberland, and for his services against the Scots thanked in November, in which month he was also appointed one of the captains of the Scottish marches.
