Wikify date September 2011 Recurring Deposits are a special kind of Term Deposits offered by banks in India which help people with regular incomes to deposit a fixed amount every month into their Recurring Deposit account and earn interest at the rate applicable to Fixed Deposits . It is similar to making FDs of a certain amount in monthly installments, for example Rs 1000 every month. This deposit matures on a specific date in the future along with all the deposits made every month. Thus, Recurring Deposit schemes allow customers with an opportunity to build up their savings through regular monthly deposits of fixed sum over a fixed period of time. br The Recurring Deposit can be funded by Standing instructions instructions by the customer to the bank to withdraw a certain sum of money from his Savings Current account and credit to the Recurring Deposit every month. When the RD account is opened, the maturity value is indicated to the customer assuming that the monthly instalments will be paid regularly on due dates. If any instalment is delayed, the interest payable in the account will be reduced and will not be sufficient to reach the maturity value. Therefore, the difference in interest will be deducted from the maturity value as a penalty. The rate of penalty will be fixed upfront. Tax Deducted At Source TDS is not applicable on RDs. The customer can avail loans against the collateral of Recurring deposit up to 80 to 90 of the deposit value. When the term is over it can be withdrawn or it can be held for another term. Generally speaking, the longer the term the better the yield on the money. The opposite, sometimes known as a sight deposit or on call deposit, can be withdrawn at any time, without any notice or penalty e.g., money deposited in a checking account or savings account in a bank. The rate of return is higher than for savings accounts because the requirement that the deposit be held for a prespecified term gives the bank the ability to invest it in a higher gain financial product class. However, the return on a time deposit is generally lower than the long term average of that of investments in riskier products like stocks or bonds. A deposit of funds in a savings institution is made under an agreement stipulating that a the funds must be kept on deposit account deposit for a stated period of time, or b the institution may require a minimum period of notification before a withdrawal is made. orphan date January 2010 A discretionary deposit is the term given to a device by Middle Ages medieval Europe an banker s as a method of circumventing Catholic Church Catholic canon law edicts prohibiting the sin of usury . At the time, most Christian nations heavily incorporated Bible Biblical scripture into their laws, and as such it was illegal for any person to charge interest on a loan of money. The name comes from the workings of the device a rich person would Deposit account deposit a large sum with a bank. His name would be kept a secret at the banker s discretion , as a discretionary deposit was seen as an obvious dodge around the charging of usury, and it would have embarrassed the Pope , cardinal Catholicism cardinal s, and various nobles and merchants who made use of this device. Every year, in gratitude for the personage s deposit, the banker would make the account a gift , the exact amount of which would be at the banker s discretion. Of course, the gifts would work out to whatever the prevailing rate was, 8 12 , perhaps. Should a banker s gifts be too little, depositors would eventually take their money to another bank whose gifts were more commensurate with the going rate. Discretionary deposit accounts were not demand deposit accounts, and so notification of withdrawals often had to be given in advance sometimes as much as a year ref pg 54 of De Roover 1948 ref . Globalize date August 2009 In the field of tax ation, a deposit is not included as gross income to the receiving party until the depositing party chooses to apply the funds to purchase services. A 1990 ruling ref Commissioner v. Indianapolis Power & Light Co. , 493 U.S. 203 1990 ref provides that a deposit differs from an advance payment because the depositing party has dominion over the funds and retains the right to insist upon repayment in cash. On the other hand, the party making an advance payment retains no right to insist upon the return of the funds as long as the recipient fulfils the contract ual agreement. The rationale behind the court s decision is that the recipient of the deposit does not enjoy complete dominion over the funds and is subject to an express obligation to repay so long as the customer fulfils his or her legal obligations. Additionally, both the timing and the method of refund are largely within the control of the depositing party, as he or she can choose to insist upon repayment in cash or apply the deposit to purchase services. The recipient s right to retain the funds of the deposit is contingent upon events that are outside of his or her control. An important note is that although the recipient may receive an economic benefit from the deposits i.e. interest the prospect that income will be generated provides no ground for taxing the principal. However, any income that the recipient may earn through the use of the deposit money is, of course, taxable. Notability date June 2009 Refimprove date June 2009 In the field of archaeology a deposit model is a method of identifying the character and degree of survival of buried archaeological remains over a specified area without necessarily excavating the whole area. Following the introduction of archaeology into the planning process in most western nations, the importance of gathering as much information as possible on a site without digging it up has grown. Such information can be used to inform the decisions made by planners, developers and archaeologists about the necessity for, and nature of, any archaeological work in advance of new building. A deposit model uses the results of previous excavations and other intrusive archaeological investigations to estimate the nature of the archaeology over a wider area. Productive excavations in one area would suggest that land nearby would also be productive. Since the buried archaeological record is essentially a volume of earth trapped between the two archaeological horizons defined by the underlying archaeological natural natural geology and the horizon of modern intrusions projecting down into the record, the detailed mapping of the underlying geology of an area has become important in deposit modeling and has resulted in a growth of work for geoarchaeology geoarchaeologists . The results of surveying can be extrapolated between known geographical points and used to estimate the impact of certain types of development. By taking into account known disturbances to the ground certain areas can be presumed to have limited archaeological potential. A survey of buildings identifying which have basements in them for example may suggest that certain streets have had all their archaeology removed or truncated in the past.
