Quintus Gargilius Martialis was a Ancient Rome Roman writer on horticulture . He has been identified by some with the military commander of the same name, mentioned in a Latin inscription of 260 as having lost his life in the colony of Auzia in Mauretania Caesariensis. Considerable fragments of his work probably called De hortis , which treated of the cultivation of trees and vegetables, and also of their medicinal properties, have survived, chiefly in the body of and as an appendix to the Medicina Plinii an anonymous 4th century handbook of medical recipes based upon Pliny the Elder , Pliny s Natural History Naturalis Historiae , xx&ndash xxxii . Extant sections treat of apple s, peach es, quince s, almond s and chestnut s. Gargilius also wrote a treatise on the tending of cattle De curis bourn . Martialis P. Aelius was a Roman soldier of the mid 3rd century AD. He is known to us from a lapidary inscription on his sarcophagus dating from the early 260s found at Aquincum i.e. Budapest in the Roman province of Pannonia Inferior . This was dedicated to Martialis and his wife, Flavia Agathe, by his son, Aelianus P. Aelius , and it designates him as the ex custode armorum i.e. formerly in charge of the Weapons of Legio II Adiutrix . ref For a full discussion of this inscription see cite book title Commanders of Legions in the Age of Gallienus last Nagy first Prof. T. year 1965 publisher Acta Archeologica Academiae Scientarum Hungaricae, Tm. XVII location Budapest . ref The Roman naming conventions nomen Aelius suggests that Martialis s family became Roman citizens in the first part of the 2nd century and, possibly when the future Emperor Hadrian was governor of the province of Pannonia and established Aquincum as a municipium &mdash i.e. , a town settlement of citizens awarded the Latin Right &mdash around the turn of the century. clarify date November 2011 The original Aelius is, therefore, likely to have been a soldier in a unit of auxilia who received the citizenship together with his diplomata i.e. certificate of honourable discharge from the service . His descendants no doubt continued the connection with the local legion, II Adjutrix . Martialis s son, Aelianus, became the first equestrian commander of that unit in the early 260s following the exclusion of senators from military commands . Martialis would, therefore, have been one of the Illyricani , who provided the officer cadres of the garrisons of Pannonia and Upper Moesia. The Custos Armorum of Legio II would have earned several times the basic military salary with official pay and perquisites and, no doubt, tolerated corruption. In ancient Rome , confarreatio was a traditional Patrician ancient Rome patrician form of Roman marriage marriage . The ceremony involved the bride and bridegroom sharing a cake of spelt , in Latin far or panis farreus , hence the rite s name. The Flamen Dialis and Pontifex Maximus presided over the wedding , and ten witnesses had to be present. The woman passed directly from the hand manus of her father or head of household the paterfamilias to that of her new husband. Having parents who were married by confarreatio was a prerequisite for becoming a Vestal Virgin Vestal or the Flamen Dialis . Confarreatio seems to have been limited to those whose parents were also married by confarreatio , but later, perhaps with the rise of nobiles plebeian nobiles , this requirement must have been relaxed. Scipio Africanus presumably married his wife Aemilia Tertia by confarreatio , because their elder son was Flamen Dialis yet Scipio s mother Pomponia was a plebeian. Likewise, Julius Caesar married Cornelia Cinna Minor Cornelia by confarreatio , but neither had patrician mothers, and Caesar s parents had not married by confarreatio . Divorce for confarreatio marriages, diffarreatio , was a difficult process and therefore rare. Not much is known about how diffarreatio was carried out except that there was a special type of sacrifice that caused the dissolution of the relationship between the man and woman. She would then pass back into the manus of her paterfamilias . Originally, the confarreatio was indissoluble, and this remained true of the marriage of the Flamen Dialis. The other two Flamen Flamines maiores major flamens , the Flamen Martialis and the Flamen Quirinalis , were also required to marry by confarreatio. The three major flamens were also required to marry virgins further, if the wife of the Flamen Dialis died, he was immediately required to resign. The essential part of the apex, to which alone the name properly belonged, was a pointed piece of olive wood, the base of which was surrounded with a lock of wool. This was worn on the top of the head, and was held there either by fillets only, or, as was more commonly the case, was also fastened by means of two strings or bands, which were called apicula Festus dn date April 2012 , s.v. , or offendices Festus, s.v. , though the latter word is also interpreted to mean a kind of button, by which the strings were fastened under the chin cf. Serv. ad Virg. Aen. ii.683, viii.664, x.270 . The flamines were forbidden by law to go into public, or even into the open air without the apex Gellius x.15 , and hence we find the expression of alicui apicem dialem imponere used as equivalent to the appointment of a Flamen Dialis Livy vi.41 . Sulpicius was deprived of the priesthood, only because the apex fell from his head whilst he was sacrificing Valerius Maximus i.1 5 . Dionysius of Halicarnassus ii.70 describes the cap as being of a conical form. On ancient monuments we see it round as well as conical.
