Image Polaroid bc flash model 281 IMGP1842 WP.jpg thumb Polaroid BC flash model 281 BC Flash Battery Capacitor Flash was a Flash photography flash photography system used with flashbulbs. Instead of relying directly on the current pulse ability of a Battery electricity battery to directly fire a flashbulb, a battery was used to charge a capacitor that would then discharge through the flashbulb. BC flash units used either 15 volt V or 22 V batteries. Advantages The advantage was that even with an aging battery, the flashbulb would still get a high current pulse and thus reliably fire, although the recycle time between flashes would increase as the battery aged. Unreferenced date December 2008 The flash pan or priming pan is a small receptacle for priming powder, found next to the touch hole on muzzleloading gun s. Flash pans are found on hand cannon gonne s, matchlock s, wheellock s, snaplock s, snaphance s, and flintlock s. Development The flash pan was at first attached to the gun barrel , but was later moved to the lock plate of the gun. A small amount of finely ground gunpowder is placed in the flash pan and ignited. The flash of flame travels through the touch hole igniting the main charge of propellant inside the barrel. Unlike cannon, it was not necessary or desirable to place priming in the touch hole itself. The flash alone, and not particles of burning powder was enough to ignite the main charge. &ldquo Flash in the pan&rdquo The ignition of the main charge from the flash pan was not a guaranteed operation, however, and sometimes it failed. In those cases the spark would flash in the pan, but the gun would fail to fire. This led by the end of the 17th century to the expression &ldquo flash in the pan &rdquo to mean a failure after a brief and showy start, or momentary sensation of no real importance. ref Elkanah Settle, in Reflections on several of Mr. Dryden s plays 1687, had this to say If Cannons were so well bred in his Metaphor as only to flash in the Pan, I dare lay an even wager that Mr. Dryden durst venture to Sea. cite web title The Phrase Finder Flash in the pan url http www.phrases.org.uk meanings flash in the pan.html accessdate 2012 04 18 ref See also Miquelet Lock Glossary of firearms terminology Notes Reflist External links http homepages.ihug.com.au dispater handgonnes.htm Handgonnes and Matchlocks possible source Category Firearm components firearm stub de Pfanne Steinschloss ja lv Uzliesmojuma panna nl Kruitpan zh ... more details
