  1. Cosmic ray visual phenomena

Cosmic ray visual phenomena , also referred to as phosphenes or light flashes , are spontaneous flashes of light visually perceived by astronauts outside the magnetosphere of the Earth, such as during the Apollo program . Researchers believe that cosmic ray s are responsible for these flashes of light, though the exact mechanism is unknown. Hypotheses include one or all of Cherenkov radiation created as the cosmic ray particles pass through the vitreous humor of the astronauts human eye eye s, direct interaction with the retina optic nerve, or direct interaction with visual centres in the brain. ref cite journal last Narici first L title The ALTEA ALTEINO projects studying functional effects of microgravity and cosmic radiation journal Advances in Space Research date 1 January 2004 year 2004 volume 33 issue 8 pages 1352 1357 doi 10.1016 j.asr.2003.09.052 url http people.roma2.infn.it morselli A94Altea.pdf accessdate 10 April 2011 bibcode 2004AdSpR..33.1352N ref Astronauts almost always reported that the flashes were white, with one exception in which the astronaut observed blue with a white cast, like a blue diamond . There were a few different types of flashes spots and stars were observed 66 of the time, streaks were observed 25 of the time, and clouds were observed 8 of the time. Once their eyes became Dark adaptation adapted to the dark , Apollo astronauts reported seeing this phenomenon once every 2.9 minutes on average. They also reported that they observed the phenomenon more frequently during the transit to the Moon than during the return transit to Earth . During the Apollo 16 and Apollo 17 transits, astronauts conducted the ALFMED Experiment where an astronaut wore a helmet designed to capture the tracks of cosmic ray particles to determine if they coincided with the visual observation. Examination of the results showed that two of fifteen tracks coincided with observation of the flashes. These results in combination with considerations for geometry and Monte ...   more details

Unreferenced date December 2007 The interstimulus interval is the temporal interval between the offset of one stimulus physiology stimulus to the onset of another. For instance, Max Wertheimer did experiments with two stationary, flashing lights that at some interstimulus intervals appeared to the subject as moving instead of stationary. In these experiments, the ISI is simply the time between the two flashes. The term interstimulus intervals is also relevant for classical conditioning , usually denoting the time between the unconditioned stimulus food and the conditioned stimulus bell or whistle . It is particularly relevant in Eyeblink conditioning , in which it has been found that the interstimulus interval is a major factor in creating an optimal learning paradigm.
