  1. Sheldon Gang

The Sheldon Gang was a Chicago bootlegging gang during the early years of Prohibition known for being the main rivals of the Saltis McErlane Gang and the Southside O Donnell Brothers . Formed by Ralph Sheldon in the months following the passage of the Volstead Act , the Sheldon Gang quickly became major liquor suppliers in Chicago s Southwest Side as well as a main supplier to Al Capone. The gang maintained an uneasy truce with the other rival gangs, until 1923, when a brief gang war broke out between the Sheldon Gang and the Southside O Donnells until O Donnell leader Edward O Donnell was forced to leave Chicago after being severely wounded, by Frank McErlane , during a drive by shooting on September 25, 1925. Once the O Donnell s were eliminated, the Saltis McErlane Gang, who had been allied to the Sheldon Gang, continued attacking the Sheldon Gang and by April of the following year the gang had lost their two top distributors Frank DeLaurentis and John Tucillo . In October, a general amnesty had been ordered between Al Capone s Chicago Outfit and Bugs Moran s North Side Gang . However on December 30 Sheldon Gang member Hillory Clements was killed by the Saltis McErlane Gang and in retaliation the Sheldon Gang killed Saltis gunmen Charlie Hubacek and Frank Koncil several months later March 11, 1927. Joe Saltis soon went to Capone who, in exchange for a large percentage of his profits, would negotiate peace between the two. During the later years of Prohibition the Sheldon Gang was suspected of supplying liquor to Capone rival Bugs Moran s North Side Gang. In the closing days of Prohibition and with the emergence of Charles Luciano s National Crime Syndicate the Sheldon Gang, like most of the remaining bootlegging gangs, were absorbed into the syndicate by 1932. Some time in the 1930s, the Sheldons dropped a bomb from an airplane into an ice cream store, in Creve Coeur ... Gang ...   more details

  1. Jennings Gang

The Jennings Gang ca. 1897 was a gang of outlaw s in the closing days of the Old West , notable in that one member was a former Wild Bunch gang member, Richard Little Dick West , and the leader of the gang, Al Jennings, ran for Oklahoma Governor in 1914. The gang originated in Oklahoma, following the downfall of the Wild Bunch at the hands of three US Marshal Deputy US Marshals , Heck Thomas , Bill Tilghman , and Chris Madsen . Following the killing of outlaw and Wild Bunch leader Bill Doolin , by Heck Thomas in 1896, Little Dick West joined up with Al and Frank Jennings, and Morris and Pat O Malley, to form what would be known as the Jennings Gang. However, the gang was less than successful. They conducted a series of failed train robbery attempts, one of their last being a case where they blew up an entire train car, only to find that there was no money in the trains safe. Another time, they robbed a general store , receiving only 15 for their troubles. Less than a year after they were formed, they broke up. Al and Frank Jennings, as well as both O Malley brothers, were captured and sentenced to prison . Little Dick West eluded capture until later in 1898, when he was killed by Deputy US Marshal Madsen, in Oklahoma. In 1914 Al Jennings ran for Oklahoma Governor, but was soundly defeated. Infobox Criminal organization name Boodle Gang image caption founded on c. 1850 founding location Manhattan, New York founded by years active 1850s 1890s territory Lower West Side ethnic makeup membership est criminal activities Hijacking, armed robbery , theft allies rivals Potashes gang Potashes , Hudson Dusters The Boodle Gang was an American street gang active in New York City during the mid to late 19th century. The gang were notorious butcher cart thieves during the 1850s and their hijacking methods would later be used by criminals of the early twentieth century. History One of the earliest wiktionary Hijack hijack ers in New York s history, the Boodle Gang began raiding food provision wagons which passed though their territory of New York s Lower West Side during the 1850s. After the wagons began traveling around the West Side, the gang began moving into Centre Market soon dominating the area as the leading butcher cart mob. The gang s particular method, similar to other butcher mobs of the period, after approaching the store with a wagon about a dozen gang members would charge into a butcher shop stealing a whole carcass and fleeing in the wagon. The gang s theft usually met with indifference as rival competitors such as the Potashes gang Potashes were quick to take advantage by offering meat at discount prices. By the 1860s, the Boodlers had perfected their techniques and had begun robbing messengers and couriers in the financial district. The gang s activities became very lucrative, particularly in January 1866 when two members robbed a courier carrying 14,000 and escaping by jumping onto a wagon losing their pursuers by clogging traffic in Beekman Street with three other carts. While the police were never able to halt their activities, the gang fared poorly during various gang wars during the 1890s, especially against the Hudson Dusters who would come to dominate the area by the end of the decade. The Boodle moniker failed to instill fear among rival gangs ...   more details
