The shallow water is caused by a wide underwater plateau covering an extended area of 12,000 square miles 42,000  km . Depths at the cap range from approximately 400 feet 122 m to 2,300 feet 700 m . The FlemishCap is located within an area of transition between the cold waters of the Labrador Current and warmer waters influenced by the North Atlantic Current . The mixing of the warmer and colder waters over the plateau produces the characteristic clockwise circulation current over the cap. The waters of the FlemishCap are deeper and warmer than the Grand Banks . Unreferenced date December 2009 Image WorkingAtTheYardarm.jpg thumb right A deckhand standing on both the main footrope and the flemish horse. A flemish horse is a footrope on a square rigged sailing ship that is found at the extreme outer end of the yardarm yard . The main footrope runs along the whole length of the yard, but because of its length the angle upwards to where it is attached is quite shallow, and thus it is too high to stand on for some distance inwards. Sailors on this part of the yard stand on the flemish horse instead, which being shorter hangs down more and hence is low enough to stand on. The flemish horse, being at the outer end of the yard, often made of thinner rope and attached only at its ends, is somewhat unstable compared with the main footrope. This, together with the requirement to step off the main footrope in order to get onto it means that a place on the flemish horse is generally reserved for the more experienced sailors working on a yard. The origin of the term is not clear. There is some evidence that at one time all footropes were known as horses e.g., in German, the footrope is to this day called Fu pferd , i.e. foot horse . It has been suggested that Flemish horses i.e. animals from Flanders in Belgium were regarded as being more unruly than most, and hence the unstable outer horse acquired this name. When he arrived at Pointe Sainte Croix now Point Platon, New York Point Platon , New York with 40 Mohawks, the Flemish Bastard was preparing for war. Brabantic Expansion The France French , Austria ns and Spain Spaniards have had influence on the vocabulary of East Flemish. Being a group of dialects rather than a clearly recognisable dialect with regional varieties such as West Flemish , the dialects spoken in the municipalities bordering West Flanders differ greatly from those spoken in the municipalities bordering the Antwerp province province of Antwerp , which often leads to speakers of these dialects believing the other person to be from that neighbouring province. This great variation is caused by the so called Brabantic Expansion , the ever increasing influence of Brabantic diphthongs, vocabulary and pronunciation that has been steadily changing the dialects of Flanders both east and westward, and made the dialects of East Flanders different from those in West Flanders. It is believed that before this expansion, East and West Flanders roughly shared the same dialect. Ghent dialect The dialect of the province s capital, Ghent , is also different from the language of the surrounding region.
