Midnight Forests was a nickname given to the forests created by President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt near the end of his term as president. In 1891 the United States Congress passed a law allowing the president to place certain federally owned properties into forest reserves ref Brands, H. W. 1997c T. R. the Last Romantic ref . Theodore Roosevelt was the president who had preserved the most land for national parks. During his time in office, he had drawn aside over convert 150000000 acre km2 of land into the reserve. Businesses that viewed Roosevelt s actions as intervening in the free market objected and, together with their political allies, they managed to get enough support in Congress by 1907 to change the 1891 law. According to Ocala News, Because Roosevelt created so many national forests, Congress tacked a rider onto a spending bill taking away a president s power to create national forests. Roosevelt had 10 days to sign it ref Latham Carr, Susan. 2007. Forest Service must allow for use of lands, but still preserve them for future ref . Roosevelt had no way of vetoing the Agriculture Bill of 1907 it was attached to without gaining more political enemies. The president spent the few days deciding with Gifford Pinchot , head of the U.S. Forest Service , the areas to mark as national forest reserves. He waited until the last minute, after he had proclaimed about convert 16000000 acre km2 , to sign the bill presented by the United States Congress. Dominated by the species Avicennia marina , known locally as the hara or harra tree, the forests represent an important ecological resource. The Hara Protected Area on Quesm and the nearly mainland is a biosphere reserve where commercial use is restricted to fishing mainly shrimp , tourist boat trips, and limited mangrove cutting for animal feed. Hara tree characteristics The hara tree, Avicennia marina , grows to heights of three to eight meters and has bright green leaves and twigs. The tree is a salt water plant that is often submerged at high tide . It usually blossoms and bears fruit from mid July to August, with yellow flower s and a sweet almond like fruit . The seeds fall into the water, where wave action takes them to more stationary parts of the sea. The hara seeds become fixed in the soil layers of the sea and grow. The area on the north shore of Qeshm and the neighboring mainland is particularly suited to the growth of the plant, and large mangrove forests have developed. Politicians were particularly incensed at Soyinka s prescient portrayal of post colonial Nigerian politics as aimless and corrupt. Despite the deluge of criticism, the play remains an influential work. In it, he espouses a unique vision for a new Africa, one that is able to forge a new identity free from the influence of European imperialism. A Dance of the Forests is regarded as Soyinka s theatrical debut. In it, Soyinka unveils the rotten aspects of the society and demonstrates that the past is no better than the present when it comes to the seamy side of life.
