In statistics and information theory , the expected formation matrix of a likelihood function math L theta math is the matrix inverse of the Fisher information matrix of math L theta math , while the observed formation matrix of math L theta math is the inverse of the observed information matrix of math L theta math . ref Edwards 1984 p104 ref Currently, no notation for dealing with formation matrices is widely used, but in books and articles by Ole E. Barndorff Nielsen and Peter McCullagh , the symbol math j ij math is used to denote the element of the i th line and j th column of the observed formation matrix. These matrices appear naturally in the asymptotic expansion of the distribution of many statistics related to the likelihood ratio . In American football , the A formation was a variation of the single wing formation used with great success by the New York Giants of the 1930s and early 1940s. This formation was masterminded by Giants coach Steve Owen football Steve Owen and relied heavily upon Pro Football Hall of Fame Hall of Fame Center American football center Mel Hein for its success. The A formation differed from the traditional single wing in that the quarterback played further back from the line and closer to the center. It also place the backfield opposite the strong side of the unbalanced line, providing more flexibility in the running game though less power . The wingback is on the opposite side compared to the single wing and the quarterback is the primary passer, rather than the Halfback American football tailback . The name of the formation was arbitrary, not from its slight resemblance to the letter A , unlike formations named I , T , V , and Y for the shapes formed by the backs positioning Owen labeled the standard single wing his team s B formation. ref cite book last Owen first Steve title My Kind of Football publisher David McKay Company, Inc. year 1952 location New York City pages 131 167 ref One major advantage of the A is the center could snap the ball to any of three players typically to the fullback or blocking back for runs and the quarterback for passes. 1. Matrix vote

Wikify date April 2010 Orphan date June 2009 The matrix vote can be used when one group of people wishes to elect a smaller number of persons, each of whom is to have a different assignment. Examples of its use are when an association elects its executive committee and when a parliament elects its all party power sharing coalition government. Let us consider the situation in which a parliament elects a government of ten ministers. The ballot paper is tabular, a matrix, ten by ten on one axis are listed the ten ministerial posts to be elected, and on the other axis are the ten preferences. Each MP then casts one vote of a maximum of ten preferences, naming the ten ministers in her order of preference, and saying at the same time in which ministerial post she wishes each of her nominees to serve. A full ballot will contain one name in each column, and one name in each row that is, she identifies, in her order of preference, ten nominees, one for each of the ten ministerial posts. The count is in two stages a Quota Borda system QBS is used to identify the ten most popular candidates and then a Borda count Modified Borda count Modified Borda Count determines which of these successful candidates will serve in which ministry. The matrix vote is proportional. It is ideally suited, therefore, to the formation of power sharing governments, especially in post conflict scenarios, and not least because it works without any resort to party or sectarian labels. ref Designing an All Inclusive Democracy by Peter Emerson, published by Springer Verlag, 2007, part I pages 61 85, Designing an All Inclusive Democracy ISBN 978 3 540 33163 6 print 978 3 540 33164 3 online ref ref http www.deborda.org faq voting systems what is the matrix vote.html Information on the Matrix vote ref References Reflist DEFAULTSORT Matrix Vote Category Electoral systems ...   more details

  1. Pentadiagonal matrix

    In linear algebra , a pentadiagonal matrix is a matrix mathematics matrix that is nearly diagonal matrix diagonal to be exact, it is a matrix in which the only nonzero entries are on the main diagonal, and the first two diagonals above and below it. So it is of the form math begin pmatrix c 1 & d 1 & e 1 & 0 & cdots & cdots & 0 b 1 & c 2 & d 2 & e 2 & ddots & & vdots a 1 & b 2 & ddots & ddots & ddots & ddots & vdots 0 & a 2 & ddots & ddots & ddots & e n 3 & 0 vdots & ddots & ddots & ddots & ddots & d n 2 & e n 2 vdots & & ddots & a n 3 & b n 2 & c n 1 & d n 1 0 & cdots & cdots & 0 & a n 2 & b n 1 & c n end pmatrix . math It follows that a pentadiagonal matrix has at most math 5n 6 math nonzero entries, where n is the size of the matrix. Hence, pentadiagonal matrices are sparse matrix sparse . This makes them useful in numerical analysis .
