Ducde Ch tillon was a French nobility French noble title . The first creation, in 1643, was for Gaspard III de Coligny , a Marshal of France , who was also known as ducde Coligny . The title referred to Ch tillon sur Loing , a possession of the House of Coligny Coligny family . He was also to have been made a peer of France at the same time, but the letters patent were never registered. His son Gaspard IV also bore the title, and died in 1649. The dukedom was recreated in 1696 for Paul Sigismond de Montmorency Luxembourg, son of Fran ois Henri de Montmorency, ducde Luxembourg . He had inherited the lordship of Ch tillon from his aunt Angelique Elisabeth de Montmorency, widow of the last ducde Ch tillon. In 1713 he ceded the dukedom to his son, Charles Paul Sigismond, who received a brevet to be styled duc d Olonne as his father retained the Ch tillon title , though not the lands. In 1735 he in turn ceded the dukedom to his son Charles Anne Sigismond, who received a similar brevet as duc d Olonne. On his death in 1777 he was succeeded by his son, Anne Charles Sigismond, who had previously inherited the duchy peerage of Ducde Piney Piney Luxembourg . Both titles became extinct on the death of Charles Emmanuel Sigismond, ducde Montmorency Luxembourg, in 1861. Another creation, on 1 March 1736, referred not to Ch tillon sur Loing but to Ch tillon sur S vre . The grantee, who was also made a peer, was Charles Alexis Madeleine Rosalie House of Ch tillon de Ch tillon , a lieutenant general in the army and governor of Louis, Dauphin of France 1729 1765 the Dauphin . Louis deBeaufort 6 October 1703 11 August 1795 was a France French historian of whose life little is known. In 1738 he published at Utrecht city Utrecht a Dissertation sur l incertitude des cinq pr miers si cles de l histoire romaine , in which he showed what untrustworthy guides even the historians of highest repute, such as Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus , were for that period, and pointed out by what methods and by the aid of what documents truly scientific bases might be given to its history. This was an ingenious plea, bold for its time, against traditional history such as Charles Rollin Rollin was writing at that very moment. A German, Christopher Saxius , endeavoured to refute it in a series of articles published in vols. i. iii. of the Miscellanea Liviensia . Beaufort replied by some brief and ironic Remarques in the appendix to the second edition of his Dissertation 1750 . He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in October, 1746. ref cite web url http www2.royalsociety.org DServe dserve.exe?dsqIni Dserve.ini&dsqApp Archive&dsqCmd Show.tcl&dsqDb Persons&dsqPos 0&dsqSearch 28Surname 3D 27beaufort 27 29 title Library and Archive Catalogue publisher Royal Society accessdate 11 December 2010 ref He also wrote an Histoire de Cesar Germanicus Leyden, 1761 , and La R publique romaine, ou plan general de l ancien gouvernement de Rome The Hague, 1766, 2 vols quarto . Though not a scholar of the first rank, Beaufort has at least the merit of having been a pioneer in raising the question, afterwards elaborated by Barthold Georg Niebuhr Niebuhr , as to the credibility of early Roman history. Antoine de l Age or Laage , ducde Puylaurens 1602 July 1635 was a French courtier . He was born of an old Languedoc family. Attached to the household of Gaston, Duke of Orl ans , brother of Louis XIII of France Louis XIII , he gained a complete ascendancy over the weak prince by pandering to his pleasures, and became his adviser in the intrigues against Cardinal Richelieu . It was Puylaurens who arranged the escape of Gaston to Brussels in 1632 after the capture of Henri II de Montmorency , and then negotiated his return with Richelieu, on condition that he should be reconciled to the king. As a reward Richelieu gave him Aiguillon, Lot et Garonne Aiguillon , erected into a duchy. But he plunged into new intrigues, and was imprisoned first in the Louvre in 1635, then in Vincennes , where he died the same year.
