For the album by Neil Diamond September Morn album Matin e de Septembre or September Morn is a painting by the French artist Paul mile Chabas 1869 1937 . Painted over three summers ending in 1912, it became famous when it provoked a scandal in the USA. File September Morning.jpg right thumb September Morn by Paul Chabas, 1910 1912, oil on canvas, Metropolitan Museum of Art , New York City New York Chabas first exhibited the painting in the Paris Salon of 1912, where it won a medal but did not create any sensation. The next year, when it was displayed in a window of an art gallery in Chicago , Illinois USA , it came to the attention of the mayor of the city, Carter Harrison, Jr. , who charged the owner of the gallery with indecency. The resulting court case, which the art dealer won, made the painting famous. Two months after the conclusion of the Chicago trial, Anthony Comstock 1844 1915 , a self appointed crusader against vice , threatened a New York City art dealer who was displaying the painting in his window. However, Comstock never followed up this threat with legal action. ref Kendrick 1996, p. 147. ref The public relations pioneer Harry Reichenbach claimed to have brought it to Comstock s attention as a contract job for the targeted gallery. However, Reichenbach s claim has been questioned. ref http www.museumofhoaxes.com hoax Hoaxipedia September Morn Museum of Hoaxes September Morn ref Lithograph copies of the artwork were popularly sold for over a decade, extending the succ s de scandale success that followed the scandal . Ultimately, the painting would be labelled as kitsch by critics who thought it lacking in interesting artistic features contrast, coordinated lines, and a worthy subject. It has never lacked admirers, however, and copies of the image are still sold on postcards and reproductive prints. The original painting is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City . The Soci t des Artistes Fran ais is the Professional association association of French painters and sculptors established in 1881. Its annual exhibition is called the Salon Paris Salon . When the Soci t was established, it associated all the French artists. Its president was a painter and its vice president a sculptor. The main task of the Soci t is to organize the Salon , since the French government ceased to do it. Secession In December 1890 president Bouguereau suggested that the Salon should be an exhibition of young, yet unrecognized, artists. Ernest Meissonier , Puvis de Chavannes , Auguste Rodin and others rejected this proposal and left the organization. They quickly created their own exhibition Soci t Nationale des Beaux Arts in 1899 that was also named the Salon , officially Salon de la Soci t Nationale des Beaux Arts , in short Salon du Champs de Mars . The original Salon was sometimes called Salon de Champs lys es , or simply Salon des artistes fran ais . The Cemetery of Saint Louis, Versailles lang fr Cimeti re Saint Louis de Versailles is one of several Cemetery cemeteries in Versailles , Yvelines . It is among the oldest urban cemeteries in France , having been established in 1770 by the parish of Saint Louis, Versailles, the church of which is now Versailles Cathedral . Although it may house fewer graves of well known persons than the Cemetery of Notre Dame, Versailles , it is nevertheless of significant interest for the artistic quality of many of the tombs and for the quantity of graves of aristocratic families and military officers based at the nearby Palace of Versailles . A small column against the wall marks the site of the common ditch where some 40 persons were buried, victims of the September Massacres on 9 September 1792. The massacre itself took place at the Quatre Bornes Four Milestones , at the present crossroads between the Rue de Satory and the Rue d Orl ans. The victims had been transferred from the prison at Orl ans , and were mostly former senior government officials, officers of the Royal army or refractory priests among them the Bishop of Mende . Certain monuments are distinguished by their unusual workmanship, for example that of the naval lieutenant douard Villaret Joyeuse died in 1854 at Havana , which is in the form of a rostral column .
