Michael Fitzgerald was a member of the Irish Republican Army who died on Hunger strike at Cork city Cork Jail in October 1920. A native of Ballyoran, Fermoy , County Cork , Fitzgerald was educated at the Congregation of Christian Brothers Christian Brothers School in the town and subsequently found work as a mill worker in the locality. He joined the Irish Volunteers in 1914 and played an important role in building the local organisation which was soon to become the Irish Republican Army IRA . He soon rose to the rank of Battalion Commandant, 1st Battalion, Cork No.2 Brigade. On Easter Sunday, April 20 1919 Michael Fitzgerald led a small group of IRA volunteers who captured Araglin Royal Irish Constabulary baracks on the Cork Tipperary border. He was subsequently arrested and sentenced to three months imprisonment at Cork Jail. Fitzgerald was released from prison in August 1919 and immediately returned to active IRA duty. He was involved in the holding up of a party of British Army troops at the Wesleyanism Wesleyan Church in Fermoy. The troops were disarmed although one of them was killed. Michael Fitzgerald was again arrested and jailed on 8 September 1920. After travelling in Ceylon and India he moved to Victoria Australia Victoria in 1859 and established a family brewery at Castlemaine, Victoria Castlemaine with his brother Edward. The business had soon expanded and Fitzgerald owned property in New South Wales and Queensland . Biography He was born at Port Tobacco Village, Maryland Port Tobacco Village in Charles County, Maryland Charles County , Maryland on August 6, 1799. He was educated in England and studied law. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1941 until 1962 and served as an independent member until 1950 and then as a member of the National Party of Australia Country Party . Fitzgerald was born in Dungog, New South Wales . He was the son of a dairy farmer and was educated to elementary level at Dungog Public School. He initially worked on his father s farm but eventually owned substantial dairy farms in the Hunter Valley . He was an official with local dairy farmers organizations and was a councillor on Dungog Shire council from 1901 to 1942. He was the mayor on several occasions. After one unsuccessful attempt, Fitzgerald was elected to the New South Wales Parliament at the New South Wales state election, 1941 1941 as the Independent member for Electoral district of Gloucester Gloucester .
