Francia, St. George Barbados is an atypical but exceedingly elegant historical plantation great house on a wooded hillside near to Gun Hill Signal Station , overlooking St. George valley. It was built around 1913 by a Frenchman, Rene Mourraille, who was a successful farmer in Brazil but met and married a Barbados Barbadian on a business visit and settled in Barbados . The house combines Barbados Barbadian coral stone craftsmanship, Demerara windows, an unusual entrance portico, Brazil ian wood panelling and many other attractive features. It is set in luxuriant terraced gardens and of special interest is the collection of antique West Indian maps. It is a private home but is open to visitors on weekdays. He was the master of the young British painter Richard Parkes Bonington . Life Francia was a water colour painter, was born at Calais on 21 December 1772, and was brought early in life to London by his father, a refugee. He was for some time employed as an assistant of a drawing master named Barrow, who was the master of John Varley painter John Varley . He commenced to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1795, and contributed from that year to 1821 inclusive eighty five works in all to its exhibitions. Her mother was Mar a Juana Garc a, a mistress of de Francia. Although illegitimate, and considering that de Francia was not known for any acts of kindness, he nonetheless respected his daughter. One day he found her prostituting herself shortly outside his residence, and rather than punish her, he declared prostitution as a decent profession he himself used prostitutes and that to be identified they must wear golden combs in their hair and as a result became known as peinetas de oro in the style of Spanish ladies. At some point she married Juan de la Cruz Ca ete, and gave birth to a daughter, Francisca del Rosario in 1842, two years after de Francia s death. She died in 1890, aged 83. He executed two of the frescoes in the chapel of St. Cecilia at Bologna the Baptism of Valerian and the Martyrdom of St. Cecilia . He painted a Madonna seated with SS. Francis, Bernard, Sebastian, and Maurice 1526 in Bologna and a St. Michael for the church of San Domenico, also in Bologna. Late in life Giacomo came under the influence of Dosso Dossi . Fulgencio Yegros y Franco de Torres b. 1780 in Quyquyh , d. 1821 was Paraguayan soldier and first head of state of independent Paraguay. He had his first combat experiences in 1802 against the Portuguese and in 1807 when he was part of the Paraguayan troops that defended Buenos Aires during British invasions of the R o de la Plata . He ranked captain in 1810 and was given the governorship of Misiones Department Misiones . Yegros and Pedro Juan Caballero politician Pedro Juan Caballero were the main military figures in the revolution in May 1811, which led to the independence of Paraguay. Following independence, Yegros and Jos Gaspar Rodr guez de Francia were chosen as President of Paraguay Consuls of the Republic following the model of the French Revolution. He founded the first military academy in independent Paraguay. Yegros was more of a military man than politician, and his role as Consul was marginalized by Francia.
