Libero DeLuca 1913 &ndash 1997, Horn was an Italian lyric tenor particularly associated with the French repertory. Life and career DeLuca was born in Kreuzlingen , Switzerland, and studied voice at the Zurich Coservatory with Alfredo Cairati. After winning a first prize at an international voice competition in Geneva , in 1941, he made his professional debut the following year at the Solothurn Municipal Theatre. After one season at the Bern Municipal Theatre, he became first tenor at the Zurich Opera in 1943 until 1949. During that period, he also appeared regularly to great acclaim at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples , the Royal Opera House in London, at La Monnaie in Brussels , and at the Teatro Col n in Buenos Aires . In 1949, he made his debut at both the Op ra Comique and the Palais Garnier , where he became first tenor in the French repertoire. Being Italian, Libero DeLuca was fluent in German, French and Italian, and excelled in all three repertories in lyric roles. He retired from the stage in 1961, and became a full time voice teacher in Horn, Switzerland , near Lake Constance . DeLuca made several recordings, notably in Mignon and Manon , opposite Janine Micheau , Lakm , opposite Mado Robin , and Carmen , opposite Suzanne Juyol . Her work has appeared in journals worldwide and she has read at many literary festivals, both in the UK and abroad. She grew up in Waas Walls, Shetland Walls in Shetland , the daughter of the headmaster of Happyhansel School, Sandy Pearson. After studying in Edinburgh , DeLuca worked in education for many years. She now lives in Edinburgh. In 1996 she won the Shetland Literary Prize with her first poetry collection Voes & Sounds . In 1999 her second collection Wast Wi Da Valkyries also won the Shetland prize. A third collection, Plain Song , was launched in Shetland and Edinburgh in 2002. It is accompanied by a CD of the poems read by the author. These three collections were published by The Shetland Library .
