Biography Born at South Yarra, Victoria South Yarra , Melbourne Victoria to parents Frederick and Martha Thompson, Thompson was educated at Toorak College in Melbourne leaving with Honours, Proficiency Certificates Pianoforte and Ice Skating. On 28 May 1930 she did her first flight as a pilot and later in that year obtained her A Licence. In 1932 Thompson obtained her Commercial Pilots licence and won the Adelaide Aerial Derby for Victoria. In 1933 she was the first woman in the British Empire obtain an Instructors Licence. In April 1934 Thompson sailed for England to pick up her brand new De Havilland Moth Major which had been fitted with long range fuel tanks for the journey to Australia. Thompson had accumulated over 250 hours of flying experience by this time. On 28 September 1934 Freda left Lympne , Kent for the long journey to Australia flying solo. Freda Diesing June 2, 1925 &ndash December 4, 2002 was one of very few female carvers of Northwest Coast totem poles and a member of the Haida people Haida First Nation of British Columbia , Canada. She was born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia Prince Rupert, B.C. , in 1925 and was one of the first students at the Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art Ksan at Hazelton, British Columbia Hazelton, B.C. , in Gitksan territory. There she received instruction from the art historian Bill Holm art historian Bill Holm , and the First Nations artists Tony Hunt artist Tony Hunt Kwakwaka wakw and Robert Davidson artist Robert Davidson Haida . She has carved masks and bowls as well as totem poles. Her poles include two poles raised at the Tsimshian community of Kitsumkalum near Terrace, British Columbia Terrace, B.C. , with the assistance of a Tsimshian team, a 1987 pole for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police RCMP station in Terrace, and poles in Prince Rupert. The Ford Freda is a rebadged 8 seater Mazda Bongo Multi purpose vehicle MPV , introduced to the Japanese home market in 1995. It is styled, literally, like a box, purely for space efficiency and for conservative Japanese tastes. While initially a Japanese domestic market vehicle, it is becoming increasingly popular in overseas markets for Japanese imports , particularly Great Britain , Ireland , Russia , and New Zealand . Freda Violet Lingstrom OBE 23 July 1893 15 April 1989 was a BBC Television producer and executive who was responsible for pioneering children s programmes in the early 1950s. She was born in Chelsea, London , the daughter of George Lingstrom, a copperplate engraver, and Alice Clarey Anniss. Her paternal grandparents were Swedish. She attended the Central School of Arts and Crafts and became an artist, and had a one woman show in 1936. She also wrote two novels, and a book, This is Norway , about the culture and history of that country. Her skills as an artist, illustrator and author gave her work on the editorial staff of a children s magazine. However in 1940 she joined the BBC and in 1947 she was promoted to Assistant Head of BBC Schools Broadcasting. At BBC Radio she created the lunchtime programme Listen with Mother in 1950. Soon afterwards she moved to television, and created Andy Pandy with Maria Bird and she was appointed Head of BBC Children s Television in 1951, and the following year introduced Watch with Mother for pre school children and eventually created a different programme for each weekday with The Flower Pot Men , Picture Book TV series Picture Book , The Woodentops TV series The Woodentops , and Rag, Tag and Bobtail . Freda Stark 27 March 1910 &ndash 19 March 1999 was a New Zealand dancer, and a prosecution witness after the prescription drug overdose of her lover, Thelma Mareo , in 1935. During the Second World War, she was a famed exotic dancer at Auckland s Wintergarden cabaret and nightclub, and a favourite of American troops stationed there, where she earned the title Fever of the Fleet. Early life Born in Kaeo in 1910, Freda Stark was the daughter of James Stark, a shopkeeper, and Isabella Bramley. She attended Marcellin College, Auckland St Benedict s School and Epsom Girls Grammar School after her parents shifted to Auckland shortly after her birth. Her father encouraged her to learn dance, and she began to do so at nine years of age. After leaving school, Stark worked as a clerical worker by day, and danced as L Etoile during the evenings, and her repertoire included tap, high kicks, tumbles and hula. During the 1930s, she also learned classical ballet, as steps toward an advanced examination certificate at New Zealand s Academy of Dance, which she acquired in the late thirties. Mareo murder trials In 1933, Stark joined Ernest Rolls revue, and met a young dancer named Thelma Trott , and the two women fell in love. In 1934, Stark was in the chorus of the Duchess of Danitz , while Trott starred. At this time, Trott married Eric Mareo , their conductor.
