Primary sources date February 2011 The Spotlight is a UK directory of actor s and actresses. It was established in 1927. It originally existed as a printed directory, but now also exists as an online interactive directory. Typically, each actor and actress will be represented by a black and white portrait photograph and details of their Casting Agent agents name, address, and other contact details . Some actors may also include specific skills such as singing, musical ability, or languages spoken or physical characteristics for example their height, or their hair or eye colouring . The service also lists behind the scenes personnel such as directors and choreographer s. According to The Spotlight s website, it currently lists over 30,000 people. The Spotlight is primarily intended for use by professionals in the film, TV, stage and radio professions, and this is reflected in the cost of the service the printed directory of actors for the year 2006 2007 costs 75 00 for a 5 volume work . The full interactive online service is only available to industry professionals. However, many larger Library libraries hold copies of the printed directory, enabling members of the public to freely access information. The website also includes a basic search facility on its front page to enable visitors to look up an actors agents name and address. Because of this, The Spotlight is a useful tool for those wishing to send fan mail to actors, and for those wishing to contact actors to appear at Fan convention conventions . Unreferenced date December 2009 For the telephone information service Directory assistance The Directory Assistance Service DAS is an obsolete Communications protocol protocol and Service systems architecture service for accessing X.500 directory services. DAS was intended to provide a lightweight means for clients to access X.500 directory services via a split Directory User Agent model. Here the Directory User Agent DUA the directory client is split into a Directory Assistance DA client and a Directory Assistant. The directory user would interact with the DA client, the DA Client would communicate with the Directory Assistant using the DA protocol, and the Directory Assistant would communicate with the Directory Service using the X.500 Directory Access Protocol DAP . That is, the Directory Assistant is a Directory Assistance protocol to DAP gateway. This design allows the DA client to access the directory without requiring it to support the cumbersome Open Systems Interconnection protocol stack. The Directory Assistance Service was created in 1990 by Marshall T. Rose while at Performance Systems International, Inc. , and formally specified in RFC 1202 published in 1991 . XML Enabled Directory XED is a framework for managing objects represented using the Extensible Markup Language XML . XED builds on X.500 and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol LDAP directory service s technologies. XED was originally designed in 2003 by Steven Legg of eNitiatives formerly of eB2Bcom and Adacel Technologies and Daniel Prager formerly of Deakin University . The XML Enabled Directory XED framework leverages existing Lightweight Directory Access Protocol LDAP and X.500 directory technology to create a directory service that stores, manages and transmits Extensible Markup Language XML format data, while maintaining interoperability with LDAP clients, X.500 Directory User Agents DUAs , and X.500 Directory System Agents DSAs . The main features of XED are semantically equivalent XML renditions of existing directory protocols, XML renditions of directory data, the ability to accept at run time, user defined attribute syntaxes specified in a variety of XML schema languages, the ability to perform filter matching on the parts of XML format attribute values. the flexibility for implementors to develop XED clients using only their favoured XML schema language. The XML Enabled Directory allows directory entries to contain XML formatted data as attribute values. Furthermore, the attribute syntax can be specified in any one of a variety of XML schema languages that the directory understands. The directory server is then able to perform data validation and semantically meaningful matching of XML documents, or their parts, on behalf of client applications, making the implementation of XML based applications easier and faster. XML applications can also exploit the directory s traditional capabilities of cross application data sharing, data distribution, data replication, user authentication and user access control, further lowering the cost of building new XML applications ..., scalable and flexible directory system.
