Ellen Fries 23 September 1855 at R dsleg rd in T rnsfall , Kalmar l n 31 March 1900 in Stockholm was a Swedish feminist and writer. She became the first female Ph.D. in Sweden in 1883. Biography She was the daughter of colonel Patrik Constantin Fries and Beata Maria Borgstr m. She graduated from hlinska flickskolan in Stockholm 19 May 1874. She studied language and art by travelling to Paris and Leipzig and was a language teacher at Wallinska skolan in 1875 1877. The universities in Sweden had been opened to both genders in 1870. Fries enlisted as a student at Uppsala University 12 October 1877. She studied history, Nordic language and political science and was given the scholarship Kraemerska stipendiet. She became the first female Ph.D. in Sweden 31 May 1883. She was a teacher in history at Wallinska skolan in Stockholm 1884 1886 and at hlinska flickskolan from 1885 in 1890, she became its principal. In 1884, she was one of six to summon the first meeting of the feminist movement Fredrika Bremer f rbundet she initiated the foundation of Svenska kvinnors nationalf rbund Swedish Council of Women in 1896, and one of the five co founders of the Nya Idun society. From 1881, she was active in the feminist paper of Sophie Adlersparre , Tidskrift f r hemmet , mainly contributing with biographies of women, and she was also joint editor of the paper in 1883 85. In the early decades this local museum, an offshoot of the Antiquarisch Kabinet van Friesland , was focussed on typical Hindelopen Hindeloper goods and other Frisian curiosities that had been collected by the local preacher writer Joost Hiddes Halbertsma. Adelaide Lisetta Fries 12 November 1871&ndash 29 November 1949 was the foremost scholar of the history and genealogy of the Moravian Church Moravians in the southern United States . She made important contributions to the field as archivist, translator, author and editor. Fries was born in Salem now Winston Salem, North Carolina Winston Salem , North Carolina , the elder of two daughters of John William Fries 1846&ndash 1927 and Agnes Sophia de Schweinitz Fries 1849&ndash 1915 . She never married, and lived with her parents in Winston Salem until their deaths. In 1911, the Provincial Elders Conference of the Moravian Church in America, Southern Province, appointed Fries as archivist of the Southern Province, and granted her the use of a warehouse in Salem as repository and offices. She immediately began collecting, organizing, translating and publishing records, a work that continued until her death. Fries was never satisfied that the warehouse was a safe repository, and over the years her friends and supporters raised enough money to convert the former office of the Vorsteher business manager of the Salem community into a fireproof repository. The archives moved into the new building in 1942. One of Fries best known books is The Road To Salem 1944 , an account of the life of Anna Catharina Antes Ernst 1726 1816 . Fritz Rudolf Fries born 19 May 1935 is a German writer and translator. Life Fritz Rudolf Fries was born in Bilbao , Spain. His mother was a German of Spanish descent, and his father a German businessman who was shot during the Second World War by Italian partisans. In 1942 the family moved to Leipzig , a city which was heavily bombarded at the end of the war. After studying English and Romance literature under Werner Krauss linguist Werner Krauss and Hans Mayer at the University of Leipzig Karl Marx University in Leipzig, he became a freelance translator from English, French and Spanish Calder n , Cervantes , Pablo Neruda Neruda , Antonio Buero Vallejo Buero Vallejo and others , an interpreter in Prague and Moscow, and elsewhere and a writer. In 1964 he travelled to Cuba . He also made his name as editor of a four volume edition of the works of Jorge Luis Borges . From 1960 to 1966 he worked as an assistant with Werner Krauss at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Berlin. In 1972 he became a member of the PEN Center of East Germany and shortly afterwards was elected to the presidency. His first novel, Der Weg nach Oobliadooh The Road to Oobliadooh , was not approved for publication in the GDR, but with the help of Uwe Johnson it appeared in West Germany in 1966, under the imprint of the Suhrkamp publishing house.
