Robin Hood and the Curtal Friar is Child Ballads Child Ballad number 123, about Robin Hood . Synopsis This ballad is one of those appearing in earlier and later versions, the earlier one appearing in damaged form in the Percy manuscript but, as with Robin Hood and Guy of Gisborne the story also appears in May Day plays and there is good reason to think that it goes back at least to the fifteenth century. The outlaws have a good hunt. Robin Hood says there is no match for Little John within a hundred miles Will Scarlet Will Scadlock tells him that a Friar Tuck friar at Fountains Abbey can. Robin sets out to see this monk. He finds him by a riverside and forces the monk to carry him over, except that the friar throws him in halfway across. They battle until Robin asks a favor to let him blow on his horn. When the friar agrees, Robin s men appear, with bows in hand. The friar asks a favor to let him whistle. When Robin agrees, many fierce dogs appear. In the later version, Little John shoots twenty of them, and the Friar agrees to make peace with Robin. In the earlier version, Robin Hood good humoredly refuses further combat in both earlier and later versions Robin invites him to join the band. Adaptions Howard Pyle used this tale in his The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood as part of the tale of Alan a Dale Robin needed a priest who would perform the wedding ceremony in defiance of authority, and Will Scarlet proposed Friar Tuck . ref Michael Patrick Hearn, Afterword , Howard Pyle The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood , p. 384 ISBN 0 451 52007 6 ref Thirteen months The Percy Folio version of the ballad begins with the stanza But how many merry monthes be in the yeere? Patrick Walsh , Irish people Irish ambassador and friar , fl. 1580 c. 1610. Patrick Walsh was a knight and wealthy merchant in the town of Waterford, becoming Mayor of Waterford in 1580. He was an older half brother of Thomas Walsh archbishop of Cashel Thomas Walsh , Archbishop of Cashel 1626 54. Another brother, Richard Walsh , was a Jesuit . 1992, n. 28, p. 191 . It was in his capacity as Mayor that Walsh first came to notice, acting as a representative from the Urbs Intacta to Queen Elizabeth . Marmaduke Middleton , Protestant Bishop of Waterford and Lismore , wrote of Walsh in a letter to Sir Francis Walshingham dated 29th June 1580, describing the citizens of Waterford as stiffnecked, stubborn, papistical and incorrigible . He attributed their stance to Walsh, saying of him the greatest support of this is he, which was the last year mayor, whose name is Sir Patrick Walsh, a counterfeit Christian, and a great enemy of God s truth. And he is coming over to obtain something of her Majesty to maintain his knighthood withal ... Wherein I dare be bold to say, no man exceedeth the said Sir Patrick, with whom, the living God knoweth, the whole city are partakers. State papers concerning the Irish Church in the time of Queen Elizabeth, p. 41, W.M. Brady, ed. and 1992, p. 10 Walsh was married. However, he and his wife entered into a compact that upon the death of one of them, the survivor could enter a religious order. In 1598, after the death of his wife, Walsh sailed to France, joining the Capuchin order at Paris, where he died about 1610. Yet even up to the time of his death his advice was regularly sought by citizens of Waterford on municipal matters, such was his esteem in the town. F.X. Juan Perez died before 1513 was a Spanish Franciscan and companion of Christopher Columbus . Life At one time he held the office of contado r or accountant to the Queen of Spain, showing he was of noble family. Later he entered the Franciscan Order and Isabella I of Castile Queen Isabella chose him for her confessor. Finding court life distracting he asked permission to retire to his monastery. Soon after he was elected guardian of La R bida , near Palos de la Frontera Palos in Andalusia . Father Francisco Gonzaga , Superior General of the Order 1579 87 , declares that La R bida belonged to the Franciscan Custody of Seville, which by Decree of Pope Alexander VI , 21 September 1500, was raised to the rank of a province. Here Christopher Columbus in 1484 or 1485 made the acquaintance of Perez. Father Antonio de Marchena , a cosmographer of some note, lived here, and in him the navigator discovered a man bent on the project of discovering a new world. The historian Francisco Lopez Gomara in 1552 seems to have started the blunder, copied by almost every subsequent writer on the subject, of making the two names Perez and Marchena serve to describe one and the same person by speaking of the Father Guardian of La R bida as Father Juan Perez de Marchena. ref Charles Warren Currier , History of Religious Orders 1894 , p. 661. ref Both friars materially assisted Columbus, who acknowledges his obligation in one of his letters to the king and queen.
