  1. Frisian handball

File PC2007 ympresje heale finale.jpg thumb Frisian handball in Franeker Frisian handball lang fy Keatsen lang nl Kaatsen is a traditional Frisian sport, related to American handball and fives , that is most commonly practiced by people from the northern Netherlands Dutch province of Friesland Frysl n . It is believed to be one of the oldest ballgames and was an unofficial Demonstration sport at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam . The score is similar to tennis. The first team scoring six games, wins the match. Rules The major Frisian handball tournament, called the P.C. short for Permanent Committee , is the oldest regulated sports tournament in the world. The P.C. is yearly held in the city of Franeker since 1854. Frisian handball is played on a rectangular lawn of 61 m by 32 m by two teams of 3 players. In the center of one short side of the field is a receiving zone of 5 m by 19 m defended by 2 players, the other team member remaining field player. One of the opponents serves the hard leather ball with his bare hand from a serving box at about 30 meters from the receiving zone. If he does not succeed in reaching the receiving zone, the receiving team gets a direct score. When the receiving team, of which the players are allowed to wear a single hardened leather glove , returns the ball over the short line behind the serving box called the upper line, in Frisian boppe they also get a direct score. Of course, the serving team is allowed to prevent this happening by hitting or holding the ball before the upper line. The place where the ball remains after such a rally is marked with a small woodblock called a kaats , which is best defined as an undecided score. When two such undecided points occur or one, if one of the teams is on game point the teams change places. In the next rally, the team that then has the receiving position, tries to hit the ball past the first .... Landscape and Cultural Heritage in the Wadden Sea Region , Wadden Sea Ecosystem No. 12 2001, CWSS, Wilhelmshaven, p. 323. ISSN 0946 896X. ref It consists of a House residence the head and a kitchen the neck placed in line in front of a big shed the body . A striking fact is that the residence was never built in the centre front of the shed this has to do with the origin of this type of farmhouse from a smaller type of farmhouse that has now disappeared. This original Old Frisian longhouse consisted of a residence with a cattle shed immediately behind it. The harvest was stacked in the attic or in open barns which were logically located near the livestock shed. Due to the development of better harvesting materials at the beginning of the 16th century there was a need for more storage space for the harvest. This was solved by building a bigger shed behind the head and neck of the original farmhouse. These farmhouses can be found in Friesland , Groningen province Groningen ref name WSR and in the northern part of North Holland . Although sometimes considered as typically Frisian, the origin of this kind of farmhouse is found in the Het Bildt county where for the first time intensive agriculture flourished the Bildt was especially suitable for harvesting large areas of land. 1. Fasta (Frisian)

Context date October 2009 Fasta was the first folk mother, or head of the order of priestesses, of the Frisians according to the Oera Linda Book , which is generally considered to be a hoax. Appointed directly by the goddess Frijjo Frya , Fasta ruled from 2194 BC and was still reigning forty nine years later 2145 BC . Probably inspired by knowledge of the Roman mythology Roman goddess Vesta mythology Vesta , Fasta was said to head an order of priestesses that, just like the Vestal Virgins , took a vow of absolute celibacy, and who guarded a sacred, eternally burning flame. The Oera Linda Book describes the daily routine of the priestesses, which included spending six hours a day, in two shifts of three hours each, bending their knees in devotion before the flame. Each temple, of which there were many, had its own sacred flame and twenty eight priestesses, so that seven would always be in attendance at any one time. The order of priestesses governed Frisian society for many centuries until it eventually lost power to a militaristic monarchy. References Ottema, J. G., & Sandbach, W. R. 1876 . Up until the fifteenth century Old Frisian was a language widely spoken and written in what are now the Netherlands and Germany , but from 1500 onwards it became an almost exclusively oral language, mainly used in rural areas. This was in part due to the occupation of its stronghold, the Dutch Republic Dutch province of Friesland Frysl n , in 1498 when Duke Albert of Saxony replaced Frisian as the language of government with Dutch language Dutch . Image West fries.PNG thumb 290px West Frisian dialect in the Netherlands The West Frisian dialect lang nl West Fries is a Dutch dialect spoken in the contemporary West Friesland region West Friesland region , Wieringen , Wieringermeer , the coastal area from Den Helder to Castricum , and the island of Texel . It is a Hollandic Dutch language Dutch dialect but has affinities to the Frisian languages Frisian language . It is not to be confused with the language of the Friesland Province internationally indicated with the name West Frisian language in Dutch simply Fries although they are related to each other. The dialect in itself is not a fixed one, as there is a diverse number of subdialects sometimes referred to as the West Frisian dialect group that consists of some widely spoken regional dialects, namely Wierings in Wieringen, Tessels or Texels in Texel and the dialect of Vlieland known as Vlielands, which has fallen into disuse. The smaller regions and villages, such as Zijpe, Andijk, Enkhuizen and Schagen, have some distinct differences between them. Slightly more different from the rest of the group is Derps, the dialect of the village Egmond aan Zee. The dialect descends from an older form of the Hollandic dialect. Only about 7 to 9 of the people speak the strong dialect or a mixture of strong and light. The light dialect is much more widely spoken but it is also slowly beginning to become lighter and sound more like Dutch. Since the 1970s there has been more interest in reading and writing the dialect, not much was written before since it was mostly a spoken language of the common people.
