  1. Floris the Black

unreferenced date December 2009 Floris the Black was a rebel count of Holland in the 1120s and 1130s, against the claim of his brother Dirk VI, Count of Holland Dirk . Floris openly revolted against his brother Dirk and was from 1129 to 1131 recognized as Count of Holland by, amongst others, Lothair III, Holy Roman Emperor King Lothair and Andreas van Cuijk Andreas of Kuyk , Bishop of Utrecht . After March 1131 Dirk again appears as count of Holland alongside him, the brothers apparently having reached an agreement. Only a few months later, however, in August 1131, Floris accepted an offer from the West Friesland historical region West Frisians to become lord of their entire territory, which reignited the conflict with his brother. After this the people from Kennemerland joined the revolt as well. A year later, in August 1132, King Lothair intervened and managed to reconcile the brothers. This did not pacify the Frisians however, who continued their revolt, which was nonetheless eventually suppressed. Later that year, on 26 October Floris was ambushed near Utrecht city Utrecht and murdered by Herman and Godfried of Kuyk, leaving Dirk to rule the county on his own. King Lothair punished this act by having Herman and Godfried s castle razed and banishing the two. 1. Lex Frisionum

Lex Frisionum , the Law Code of the Frisians , was recorded in Latin during the reign of Charlemagne , after the year 785, when the Frankish conquest of Frisia was completed by the final defeat of the Frisian king Radboud . The law code covered the region of the Frisians . The Frisians were divided into four legal classes, to whom the law, or those transgressions of it that incurred set fines, applied. They were the nobles, the freemen, the serfs and slaves. The clergy are not mentioned in the Lex Frisionum as they were not liable to civil law. The Frisians received the title of freemen and were allowed to choose their own Podest podestat or imperial governor. In the Lex Frisionum three districts of Frisia are clearly distinguished the law governs all of Frisia, but West Frisia between Zwin and Vlie and East Frisia between Lauwers and Weser have certain stated exceptional provisions At the partition treaty of Verdun 843 the whole of Frisia became part of Lotharingia at the treaty of Meersen 870 it was briefly divided between the kingdoms of the East Franks Austrasia and the West Franks Neustria , but in 808 the whole country was united to Austrasia. The first twenty two chapters of the Lex Frisionum are entirely concerned with schedules of fines compositio and wergeld , the compensations due victims or their kin, scheduled according to the social ranks of perpetrator and victim. Remarkably, the fine for killing a woman was exactly the same as for a man of the same rank, a feature of Frisian law that links it to Anglo Saxons Anglo Saxon law, and stands apart from all other German codes. A further eleven chapters contain the Additions of the Wise Men Additio sapientum , ten subheadings from the judgements of Wiemar and of Saxmund of whom nothing is known, as well as sections from the Lex Thuringorum Law Code of the Thuringia ns to cover instances not previously covered. 1. Karelsprivilege

Karelsprivilege is a privilege that Charlemagne allegedly paid to the Frisians led by Magnus Forteman to thank them for the support that was given at the attack on Rome. Since the 13th century, the Frisians regularly mentioned Karelsprivilege in legal and historical works. The authenticity of the privilege has been heavily contested especially after the Middle Ages. The privilege formed the basis of the so called Friese freedom . It has been adopted by a number of German emperors. An affirmation and recognition of the privilege was given by Emperor Conrad II, Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II in 1039. The original has been lost, according to some it was inscribed on a wall of a church, which could be the church of Almenum , Ferwoude or Oldeboorn . Copies have been made that are passed down to the present Also there were forgeries produced. In the Middle Ages, only the original, and undamaged sealing wax impressions, were accepted as valid. There were also forged documents in circulation and a well organized archive of treaty documents that could serve as a reference did not exist. The old literature has mentioned a link between the Frisian eagle as a Charge heraldry heraldic charge in coat of arms coats of arms and the Karelsprivilege. This is unclear because in the time of Charlemagne there were no family or regional coat of arms existing, but probably it was used as the banner in that period. Other names used for this charter are Magnuskerren , Friezenprivilege , Vrijheidsprivilege , Libertas Frisonica or Previlegii Frisiorum Caroli Magni . Background Between 650 and 750 the Franks significantly expanded their realm. At that time they conquered a large part of Frisia. That conquest was not complete. The part already conquered remained in unsettled ownership, for example see ... Frisionum . To what extent this led to the imposition of law on the Frisians is unknown. The song was adopted as the Frisian anthem by the Selskip foar Frysk Taal en Skriftekennisse Society for Frisian Language and Literature on the urging of politician, writer and poet Pieter Jelles Troelstra 1860 1930 and has served as the unofficial anthem of Friesland ever since.
