  1. Frits Staal

Johan Frederik Frits Staal November 3, 1930 &ndash February 19, 2012 was Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and South & Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley . Staal was born in Amsterdam , the son of the architect Jan Frederik Staal , and studied mathematics, physics and philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. He continued with Indian philosophy and Sanskrit at Madras and Banaras . Staal was Professor of General and Comparative Philosophy in Amsterdam, 1962&ndash 67. He became Professor of Philosophy and South Asian Languages at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1968, and he retired in 1991. Staal s specialized in the study of Vedic ritual and mantra s, and the scientific exploration of ritual and mysticism . He is also a scholar of Greek and Indian logic and philosophy and Sanskrit grammar. In 1975, a consortium of scholars, led by Staal, documented the twelve day performance, in Kerala , of the Vedic Agnicayana ritual. His recent study has been concerned with Greek and Vedic geometry . Staal has argued persuasively now for decades that the ancient Indian grammarians, especially Panini, had completely mastered methods of linguistic theory not discovered again until the 1950s and the applications of modern mathematical logic to linguistics by Noam Chomsky. The early methods allowed the construction of discrete, potentially infinite generative ... of language in ancient Indian thought. Frits Henningsen c. 1900 c. 1970 was a Danish furniture designer and cabinet maker who achieved high standards of quality with exclusively hand made pieces. 1. Frits Warmolt Went

Frits Warmolt Went May 18, 1903, Utrecht city Utrecht May 1, 1990, White Pine County, Nevada Little Valley, Nevada was a Netherlands Dutch biologist whose 1928 experiment demonstrated the existence of auxin in plants . Went s father was the prominent Dutch botanist Frits Went F.A.F.C. Went . After graduating from the University of Utrecht, Holland in 1927 with a dissertation on the effects of plant hormone called auxin, Went then worked as a Plant Pathologist in the research labs of the Royal Botanical Garden, in Buitenzorg, Dutch East Indies, now Bogor, Indonesia from 1927 to 1933. He then took a position at Caltech in Pasadena, California , first researching plant hormones. His interest gradually shifted to environmental influences on plant growth. At Caltech he was among the first to demonstrate the importance of hormones in plant growth and development. He played an important role in the development of synthetic plant hormones, which then became the basis of much of the agricultural chemical industry. Funded by generous donors, Went constructed a series of greenhouses at Caltech in which he could vary light conditions, humidity, temperature, air quality and other variables. In 1949 this led to him to construct a large new complex of climate controlled rooms called the Earhart Plant Research Laboratory, also known as the phytotron . Here he produced foundational research of the effects of air pollution on plant growth. In 1958 Went was appointed director of the Missouri Botanical Garden and professor of Botany at Washington University in St Louis , at a point where he had become a world recognized authority on plant growth. He moved from Pasadena to St. Louis with his wife Catharina and their two children, Hans and Anneka.
