    No footnotes date November 2009 Refimprove date November 2009 The Michigan Chronicle is a weekly African American run newspaper based in Detroit, Michigan . It was founded in 1936 by John Sengstacke , owner of the Chicago Defender . The first editor was Louis E. Martin , whom Sengestacke sent to Detroit on June 6, giving him a 5.00 raise above his 15 per week salary at the Chicago Defender , 10 in cash and a one way bus ticket. The Sengestacke chain of papers would later also include the Pittsburgh Courier and the Tri State Defender in Tennessee. The Chronicle s first issue had a circulation of 5,000 copies. In 1944, long time publisher Longworth Quinn joined Martin at the Chronicle . The paper is considered to have arrived at this point. Originally located at 1727 St. Antoine, the Michigan Chronicle is now located at 479 Ledyard. The current publisher is Sam Logan. He d left the Chronicle in the early 2000s to start a new paper, the Michigan FrontPage . Logan subsequently returned, bringing the FrontPage with him.
