  1. Carnivorous fungus

Image 20100828 005957 Fungus.jpg thumb right 350px A fungus of the genus Arthrobotrys , showing adhesive nets which it uses to trap nematodes.  Numbered ticks are 122 µ m apart. Carnivorous fungi or predaceous fungi are fungus fungi that derive some or most of their nutrient s from trapping and digesting microscopic or other minute animal s. ref Pramer, D. 1964. Nematode trapping fungi. Science 144 382 388. ref More than 200 species have been described, belonging to the phyla Ascomycota , Mucoromycotina , and Basidiomycota . They usually live in soil and many species trap or stun nematode s nematophagous fungus , while others attack amoebae or collembola . Fungi that grow on the epidermis skin epidermis , hair , skin , nail anatomy nails , scale zoology scales or feather s of living or dead animals are considered to be dermatophytes rather than carnivores. Similarly fungi in orifices and the digestive tract of animals are not carnivorous, and neither are internal pathogens. Neither are insect pathogens that stun and colonize insects normally labelled carnivorous if the fungal thallus is mainly in the insect as does Cordyceps , or if it clings to the insect like the Laboulbeniales . Two basic trapping mechanisms have been observed in carnivorous fungi that are predatory on nematodes constricting rings active traps adhesive structures passive traps Sequencing of ribosomal DNA has shown that these trap types occur in separate fungus lineages, ref Ahr n, D., M.U. Bj rn & A. Tunlind 1998. Phylogeny of nematode trapping fungi based on 18S rDNA sequences. FEMS Microbiology Letters 158 179 184. ref an example of convergent evolution . 1. Entomopathogenic fungus

unreferenced date June 2011 An entomopathogenic fungus is a fungus that can act as a parasite of insect s and kills or seriously disables them. Image Grasshoppers killed by Beauveria bassiana USDA.jpg thumb right Grasshopper s killed by the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana Ascomycota Hypocreales Typical life cycle Image Pandora neoaphidis.jpg thumb right Green peach aphid , Myzus persicae , killed by the fungus Pandora neoaphidis Zygomycota Entomophthorales Scale bar 0.3 mm. These fungi usually attach to the external body surface of insects in the form of microscopic spore s usually asexual, mitosporic spores also called conidia . Under permissive conditions of temperature and usually high moisture, these spores germinate, grow as hyphae and colonize the insect s cuticle eventually they bore through it and reach the insects body cavity hemocoel . Then, the fungal cells proliferate in the host body cavity, usually as walled hyphae or in the form of wall less protoplast s depending on the fungus involved . After some time the insect is usually killed sometimes by fungal toxins and new propagules spores are formed in on the insect if environmental conditions are again permissive usually high humidity is required for sporulation . Groups The entomopathogenic fungi include taxa from several of the main fungal groups and do not form a monophyletic group. Many common and or important entomopathogenic fungi are in the order Hypocreales of the Ascomycota the asexual anamorph phases Beauveria bassiana Beauveria , Metarhizium , Nomuraea , Paecilomyces Isaria , Hirsutella and the sexual teleomorph state Cordyceps others Entomophthora , Zoophthora , Pandora , Entomophaga belong in the order Entomophthorales of the Zygomycota . Related fungi attack and kill other invertebrates e.g. nematodes . Pest control Since they are considered natural mortality agents and environmentally safe, there is worldwide interest in the use and manipulation of entomopathogenic fungi for biological ...   more details

  1. Fungus gnat

Multiple issues howto April 2011 unreferenced April 2011 File Trauerfliege.JPG thumb winged fungus gnat Fungus gnats are small, dark, short lived fly flies , of the families Sciaridae , Diadocidiidae , Ditomyiidae , Keroplatidae , Bolitophilidae and Mycetophilidae order Diptera , sometimes placed in the Family biology superfamily Mycetophiloidea, whose larva e feed on plant roots or fungi and aid in the decomposition of organic matter . The adults are 2 5 mm long and are important pollinator s that can help spread mushroom spore s as well as plant pollen. Typically overwintering organisms elect either to avoid freezing or tolerate freezing, but Excechia nugatoria does both. To protect its head and thorax, E. nugatoria produces noncolligative antifreeze proteins NAP , but allows its abdomen to freeze. Although how this complicated mechanism evolved is unclear, Sformo et al. poses that each trait is advantageous. By allowing the abdomen to freeze, overall evaporative water loss is reduced over the course of the winter. Meanwhile, freezing the head and thorax in other insects tends to have adverse effects on neural tissue, indicating it is best to avoid freezing the head if possible. These mechanisms have been observed in certain plant species, but E. nugatoria is the only insect known to semi freeze through the winter. ref http www2.gi.alaska.edu ScienceForum ASF19 1960.html ref ref http www.springerlink.com content t1608ql22m525001 ref References reflist Category Nematocera fly stub de Trauerm cken it Moscerini dei funghi pl Ziemi rkowate fi Harsos sket ...   more details

  1. Smut (fungus)

The smuts are multicellular fungus fungi , that are characterized by their large numbers of teliospores . The smuts get their name from a Germanic word for dirt because of their dark, thick walled and dust like teliospores. They are mostly Ustilaginomycetes of the class Teliomycetae, subphylum Basidiomycota and can cause plant disease . The smuts are grouped with the other basidiomycetes because of their commonalities concerning sexual reproduction. ref Schumann G. L., D Arcy C. J,. 2006. Essential Plant Pathology. The American Phytopathological Society. St. Paul. Pp. 28 29. ref Smuts are cereal and crop pathogens that most notably affect members of the grass family Graminaceae , including cereal crops such as maize . Examples of some of their common hosts are corn, barley, wheat, oats, sugarcane, and forage grasses. They initially attack the plant s reproductive system, forming gall s which darken and burst, releasing fungal spore s which infect other plants nearby. Before infection can occur, the smuts need to undergo a successful mating to form dikaryotic hyphae two haploid cells fuse to form a dikaryon . ref Bakkeren, G. and Schirawski, J. 2008.
